🌿 Acupuncture for Pain Relief 🌿
Pain is one of the most common reasons people seek acupuncture and it’s something I treat every single day in clinic.
Whether it’s acute (like a trapped nerve) or chronic (think arthritic knees or fibromyalgia), acupuncture offers a well-researched, gentle approach to pain management. It helps reduce flare-ups, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can:
Calm the nervous system
Reduce inflammation
Release natural pain-relieving chemicals
Improve circulation and tissue repair
Every treatment is tailored to your unique symptoms and health history and delivered by a degree-trained acupuncturist with over a decade of clinical experience.
If pain is impacting your quality of life, acupuncture might be worth exploring

How does acupuncture actually work?
I get asked this all the time by new patients, so I thought I had better make a post about it!
Acupuncture is a traditional practice that has been used for thousands of years to restore balance and promote natural healing. It involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body known as acupuncture points. Each point has a function, or a variety of different functions, and points are chosen in accordance with your signs and symptoms of illness, making acupuncture a highly personalised treatment.
Acupuncture points lie along pathways called meridians, which are believed to carry the body’s vital energy, or Qi (pronounced “chee”).
In Chinese medicine, illness occurs because the body’s energy (Qi) becomes blocked or imbalanced, this disruption in the body’s energy flow can lead to pain, illness, or emotional distress. Acupuncture works by stimulating these points to restore the smooth flow of Qi, helping the body return to it’s optimum state.
From a modern scientific perspective, acupuncture is known to influence the nervous system, increase blood circulation, reduce cortisol levels, and trigger the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins. This combination helps reduce inflammation, ease tension, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
Acupuncture can be used to address a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, stress, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, and hormonal imbalances. Many people also use it as a preventative therapy to maintain overall health and well-being.
Each session is tailored to your individual needs.

Last year I completed a comprehensive oncology acupuncture programme, which provided specialist training in the safe and effective treatment of patients undergoing cancer care.
Acupuncture does not treat cancer, but it can play a powerful supportive role for those undergoing cancer treatment.
One of the most common conditions I see in my oncology acupuncture practice is peripheral neuropathy, a side effect of chemotherapy that can cause numbness, pain, and discomfort. It’s often deeply disruptive to quality of life.
The good news? Acupuncture can offer a gentle, effective approach to managing these symptoms. My treatments focus on local points that help to:
🔸 Stimulate blood flow to affected areas, supporting nerve repair and function
🔸 Release endorphins to ease pain and lift mood
🔸 Reduce inflammation
🔸 Modulate pain signals
If you or someone you know is navigating cancer treatment and struggling with neuropathy, acupuncture may offer meaningful relief.

Today there was a states debate looking at the regulation of the professional practice of therapeutic counsellors. You see, at the moment, counsellor is not a protected title, anyone can call themselves a counsellor and set up in practice, and unlike psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists, we do not have to register with the Jersey Care Commission. This is problematic as it means that it is perfectly legal for someone to provide counselling when they are not qualified to do so, and for those counsellors who are qualified, but perhaps not registered with a governing body, it gives you, the public, no complaint route should you feel the counsellor has caused harm or conducted themselves in an unprofessional manner. Unfortunately, this debate failed, and so we still do not have to register, and anyone can call themselves a counsellor, qualified or not, competent, or not.
The proposition not only proposed that counsellors should have to register with the Jersey Care Commission, but that we should also be a member of a governing body. This was to again, ensure public safety, and counsellor accountability, it would have provided you a means to complain about the counsellor should you need to.
To protect yourself, you should look for a counsellor who is a member of a governing body, such as the BACP or the UKCP, as they check the qualifications of members prior to accepting them and ensure that members are insured. They also give you a route to complain, should you need to.
The minimum qualification a counsellor should hold is a level 4 diploma in counselling. For any specialist areas such as couples/relationship therapy, working with families or children, eating disorders or substance misuse, I would expect the counsellor to have either specific training or significant additional experience and training in these areas. Please do not hesitate to ask your counsellor about their qualifications, and to see their certificates. Most of us will be happy to provide them.

Acupuncture is a branch of traditional medicine and is one of the longest established forms of healthcare in the world. It is based on ancient Chinese medicine principles that have been developed, tested, researched and refined for over 2,500 years, to give a detailed understanding of the body's energetic balance.
Acupuncture is now accepted and widely used all over the world as a valid system of healthcare. In the UK an increasing number of people are finding this long established and refined therapy can offer an effective solution to all manner of today's ills.
Acupuncture is increasingly gaining recognition as clinical trials are proving it's efficacy. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) now recognises that acupuncture can safely help with tension-type headaches and migraine-type headaches.
Without the help of modern scientific equipment, the first acupuncturists discovered many now familiar aspects of biomedical science, such as the impact of emotional stress on the body.
From a Chinese medicine perspective acupuncture is said to regulate the flow of qi around the body through pathways called meridians. In recent years medical scientists have discovered myofascial pathways that follow the meridians recorded by the early acupuncturists, and the concept of qi itself may overlap with developing knowledge of how cells in the body communicate.
Acupuncturists insert ultra fine, sterile, single use needles into muscle and connective tissue at specific points on the body. The insertion of these needles creates a harmless micro trauma within the muscle and connective tissue which induces the body's own natural healing response, increasing blood flow, oxygen and nutrients to the area, releases muscular constrictions and triggers the release of pain killing endorphins.
Essentially, acupuncture can help direct this healing response in a more efficient way.
Evidence of acupuncture’s effectiveness is growing as researchers evaluate the best ways to measure how the body responds to it. To date the focus has been on pain management. Around the world, clinical studies are being conducted to understand how acupuncture can be beneficial for many more conditions.
2.3 million acupuncture treatments are carried out each year by British Acupuncture Council members making it one of the most popular complementary therapies practiced in the UK.
Acupuncture is considered to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines on best practice recommend that GP's offer a course of 10 sessions of acupuncture as a first line treatment for persistent migraines and tension-type headaches. The respected Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) recommends acupuncture for chronic pain, including low back pain and knee pain.
Many people have acupuncture to help with specific symptoms or to help relieve specific conditions such as insomnia, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic sinusitis, or nausea during pregnancy. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell, but have no obvious diagnosis. Others choose acupuncture simply to enhance their general feeling of well-being.
Because an acupuncture treatment is designed to affect your whole body, not just your symptoms, you may notice other niggling problems resolve during a course of treatment.
Commonly we see a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to; pain management, sports injuries, women’s health, nausea, digestive health and stress management.
Acupuncture is suitable for all ages, including babies and children. It can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine.
