CVCE Surgical Mission February 12-14, 2025

CVCE hosted a surgical mission from February 12-14, 2025. In summary, the event was a complete
success with 30 cataract surgeries performed.
This was the seventh surgical mission hosted by CVCE at our Montego Bay Clinic. The surgical mission
was a collaborative effort with many organizations and people contributing greatly to making the
mission possible:
Drs. Matthew Thompson, Greg Nelson, and Daniel Alter of FOCUS, the staff of CVCE, Dr. Claudine Green,
Canadian Vision Care (CVC), SEE International, the Lions Clubs of Montego Bay, Lions International,
Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH), Ophthalmologists from CRH, Alcon, the Ministry of Health, Jamaica
Customs Agency, Mobay Freight Services, the Brenda Stafford Foundation, and many others.
The goals for the mission were:
 To perform a minimum of 30 cataract surgeries.
 To provide world class eye health services to the patients of CRH and CVCE.
 To continue mentoring Jamaican Ophthalmologists in the MSICS cataract surgical technique.
The dedicated staff of CVCE and local volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the doctors were able to
work comfortably, safely and efficiently. They also ensured the facility, equipment, supplies, and
required services were completely prepared, allowing the patients the best experience possible.
The combined efforts of those mentioned above made it possible for nine patients to be served free of
charge, with the balance contributing only a nominal amount.
Based on the success of this mission, and past surgical missions, CVC is in the process of arranging more
surgical missions for 2025 and beyond.
Thank you to everyone who participated and worked so diligently to make this week possible.

I am very pleased to let everyone know that earlier this evening I heard from the Administrator at the Community Vision Centre of Excellence in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Pearl advised that all are safe and that today they got their electricity back. No doubt they have a way to go with clean up etc. but it is a great relief to know that everyone is okay.

Everyone at Canadian Vision Care is keeping everyone at CVCE in their thoughts and prayer. May everyone be kept safe.

A Community Vision Centre of Excellence: CVCE

Jamaican Lions have been “Knights of the Blind” for almost 50 years.

The “Brain Drain” is a reality for Jamaica and other nations. In Eyecare, less than 50 Jamaican Eye Care Professionals (ECP’s) try to provide care for over 3 million people. This is 1/10 the ECP’s per capita in Canada or the USA and 1/15 compared to the U.K.

Since 1981, Canadian Vision Care (CVC) and Jamaican Lions have provided high quality, cost effective eye care in Jamaica. CVC has a deep resource of volunteer ECP’s to provide eye exams, glasses, surgery and medications to those who cannot afford such care.
