Here, a shino medium mug purchased in kingston and traveled to Canada for the winter.

These were a few years ago. Pulled up the pics to concider a revisiting of the concept. Started with symmetrical custom order and now starting to get the first “fun” ones into the kiln.

, I’ve been doing a bit of experimentation to get results I’m happy with and to decide when it’s appropriate to spent the time and effort … vs throwing the shards in the trash.
The first is definitely trash without the sentimental attachment. We had an amazing celebration in 2022 with … we all had a “rum”cup to take home… this one held tequila for a moment at a time… When used it’s a direct link to the celebrations. 😊
The second- wood fired piece took much less time to repair and absolutely worth it. The cup itself took perhaps 5 times longer than the first one to make- then all that time in the wood kiln to come out with a fissure is such a waste. Now it’s got an even longer story and I think more valuable for that.

We all make small cups to test glaze and explore form- some of these carve a place into our ongoing vernacular that we return to kiln after kiln, year after year.

A version of these faceted “saki” cups I return to for every wood firing.

Potters in Japan have a revered status. It’s of course a pleasure to have what we do respected and honored. The respect of potters there is perhaps comparable to an loved medical doctor or lawyer in the west.

Saki cups are one of the traditional forms in Japan that have a ceremonial appreciation. ( without all the baggage and specificity of T bowls) I make a lot of “ rumcups “ but our western cousin is unfortunately a shot glass - the Vessle and the spirit often bottom shelf “cheap sh*t” . “Rumcup” avoids my negitive associations of shots but does not have the history or the cultural significance of “Saki cup”. A ceremonial vessle that is looked after carefully, stored in its own wooden box signed by the maker when not in use and loved and appreciate in every detail when we sip while enjoying the best company of friends.
