As Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaica, the Heart Institute of the Caribbean (HIC) urges all cardiac patients to take extra precautions to stay safe and protect their health throughout the storm.
Please follow these important guidelines:
💊 *Medication*:
• Ensure you have at least 7–10 days of your prescribed medication on hand.
• Keep medicines in a waterproof container and in an easily accessible location.
⚡ *Medical Devices*:
• Fully charge any oxygen concentrators, nebulizers, or home monitoring devices before the storm.
• Have backup batteries or an alternative power source if possible.
📞 *Emergency Contacts*:
• HIC patients should call the Heart Institute of the Caribbean if they have urgent cardiac concerns.
• All other cardiac patients should contact their personal cardiologists or nearest hospital for assistance.
• If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations, *call 119 immediately or go to the nearest open emergency department*.
🥦 *Diet & Stress Management*:
• Avoid salty and canned foods, which may increase blood pressure.
• Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or stimulants.
• Remain calm — anxiety and panic can strain your heart.
🏥 *After the Storm*:
• Resume normal medical follow-up as soon as it is safe to travel.
• Report any new or worsening symptoms to your healthcare provider.
💬 *Special Note for HIC Cares Members*:
A dedicated HIC physician will be available by phone 24/7 throughout the storm to respond to any medical questions or concerns. Please use your HIC Cares contact number for assistance.
Your safety and heart health are our highest priorities.
Please stay informed, stay calm, and stay protected.
