National Health Fund

National Health Fund The NHF is a programme established by the government of Jamaica to reduce the financial burden of healthcare to the Jamaican population.
(1)

The NHF focuses on illness prevention and health promotion by providing benefits that assist with the purchase of prescription drugs and by financing projects that support improvements in health. We provide two categories of benefits:

Individual Benefits - addresses the needs of individuals through financial support in filling prescriptions for the treatment of any of the fifteen chronic diseases covered. Institutional Benefits - addresses primary healthcare through support for Health Promotion and Protection and provides financial support for the public sector health system, funding infrastructure and other development projects. Institutional Benefits also assists public and private sector entities to fund projects that promote/support a healthy lifestyle. The NHF has also expanded our role with the recent integration of Health Corporation Limited (HCL) and the National Health Fund, thus forming the NHF Pharmaceutical Division. This division is responsible for procurement, warehousing and distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for state-owned hospitals, health centres and Drug Serv Pharmacies. The NHF is also responsible for the operation of the ten (10) Drug Serv Pharmacies, which dispense medications for the governmentโ€™s Abolition of User Fee programme and also provide competitively priced pharmaceuticals to the Jamaican public who are filling prescriptions issued by non-government health facilities or private healthcare providers.

In keeping with its mandate, โ€œTo provide a lifeline to health,โ€ the Jamaica Medical Foundation (JMF) has contributed $500,000 through the National Health Fund to support persons displaced by Hurricane Melissa, helping them access essential medication for their health conditions.

The donation was used to assist with the purchase of Human Tetanus Immunoglobulin (250mg), which is used to help prevent tetanus infection. This support is critical in protecting vulnerable individuals during disaster recovery, when access to timely medical care is especially important.

NHFโ€™s Chief Executive Officer met with representatives of the Jamaica Medical Foundation for the official handover, underscoring the value of partnership in safeguarding public health during times of crisis. ๐Ÿ’™

The National Health Fund continues to strengthen access to care for Jamaicans through the expansion of the NHFCard in 2025. ๐Ÿ’™

In this latest update, NHF highlights the addition of new screening benefits and chronic conditions, bringing the total number of illnesses covered to 24, along with increased subsidies across several areas of care. These expansions have helped support over 355,000 active NHFCard beneficiaries, with more than $10.3 billion paid in subsidies during the year.

According to Everton Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Fund, expanding access to early screening and treatment is critical to improving health outcomes, as early detection allows for care that is often more effective, less invasive, and more affordable.

As flu season continues, Jamaicans living with asthma are being urged to take extra care. ๐Ÿ’™
The flu can worsen asthma symptoms and increase the risk of serious complications, but with the right treatment and precautions, asthma can be effectively managed.

The NHFCard provides support for a wide range of asthma medications, including inhalers, spacers and masks, helping to reduce the cost of care. Last year alone, thousands of beneficiaries accessed asthma medication using their NHFCard.

If you or your child lives with asthma, staying consistent with treatment and taking preventative steps this flu season is essential. Support is available.
