TRIBUTE TO DR DANIEL CHANG
I want to pay tribute to this remarkable medical doctor, unassuming, dedicated, hard working, affable, organised and visionary. His hobby and passion is photography, his vocation medicine and public health.
He was a faithful executive member of CCFP T&T Chapter(1989) under the chairmanship of Dr” Chappie” Boyd and a founding member of GPATT-the now defunct General Practitioners Association of T&T. He is also loving husband of Dianne , doting father and grandfather.
He revolutionized public health prevention and delivery while he was the CMO of the Health Dept. of the POS City Corporation, leaving a legacy and shoes which were hard to fill
He, as a GP practising in the Woodbrook and St James area was the first to identify symptoms and signs of a “new disease” alerting me to same as we then referred the cases to Specialists Drs Waveney Charles , Winston Ince and Neville Byam and after to Prof Courtenay Bartholomew.
This was later to become known as HIV-AIDS
Long before others did it, he made a documentary with the patients’ explicit wish that others should know- of a model dying of the disease abandoned by family support but having been infected by IV drug use, then after the first female patient infected by her husband who had gotten it by blood transfusions in the hospital , prompting Dr Charles to clean up the Blood Bank. We tried to highlight the effect it had on all parties although our first cases were clearly homosexual or bisexual. We highlighted the stigma and at first religious intolerance which changed to sympathy and assistance when they saw the videos. We tried to educate, with the help of Health Promotion Specialist Mrs. Carol Senah ,to prevent, to fight stigma and to sound the alarm. The saga continued.
Prior to that the three of us had mounted an island wide campaign of education to highlight the NCDS, the idea again conceived by Dr Chang.
He has never been properly acknowledged for his work and I salute him
