A Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) test is a low energy X-ray technology designed to detect possible bone loss in patients. Typically a scan takes a few minutes and is commonly done of the lumbar spone, hip and forearm and it measures the amount of bone minerals in those specific areas.

Patients should wear loose fitted clothing without any zippers or medal attachments when attending the test. In preparation for the test the patient is not to take any calcium/vitamin supplement for 24 hours before the exam or any nuclear medicine dye injection or a barium study within the past 2 weeks.
