Herniated discs occur when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, including age-related wear and tear, known as disc degeneration, where discs lose some of their water content, making them less flexible and more prone to tearing or rupturing even with minor strain or twist. Sudden injuries from lifting heavy objects improperly or an accident can also cause a disc to herniate. Additionally, factors such as obesity, genetics, and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of developing a herniated disc, as these conditions put extra pressure on the spine and its discs.
