Ronald William Merrills (23 July 1957 – 5 June 2020),better known by the stage name Judah Eskender Tafari was a Jamaican reggae vocalist and musician, known for his distinct vocal tone, and spiritual outlook. His records on the Studio One label are regarded as classics. He died in 2020 after a lengthy illness.
Tafari grew up poor in Gordon Town, Jamaica.[4] He taught himself to play guitar and formed a group with friends 'The Captive Lions' who became the backup group for singer Asher Mackafat. Tafari learnt to sing harmony. Mackafat was a Twelve Tribes member and the band, and Tafari himself, were absorbed into the group from 1976 to 1978, becoming known as the Twelve Tribes Band. Tafari remained a member of the Twelve Tribes organization until his death. Fellow musicians Bagga Walker and Pablove Black introduced Tafari to record producer Coxsone Dodd as a potential vocalist. Feeling he needed a "vocalist name" Tafari appealed to a visiting Ethiopian Princess who suggested several amharic words. He chose 'Eskender' as it meant 'commander'.
From 1978 till 1980 Dodd released a run of six singles on his Studio One label, "Jah Light", "Rastafari Tell You", "Always Trying", "Conquer Me", "Danger In Your Eyes" and "Just Another Day", on some of which Tafari not only sang but also played guitar and arranged.[3] An album African Blood was scheduled but never released.
Tafari left the Studio One fold, playing bass with the Generation Gap band in Jamaica, and Brigadier Jerry in Canada. On a visit to the USA in 1986, Tafari rediscovered his fame as a vocalist, and recorded some songs for WFMU DJ Jeff Sarge, which trickled out on the Shaka Label over the next 10 years. After living for several years in Los Angeles, Tafari later settled in Brooklyn, and did steady touring work, both as vocalist and musician. In 1993 he recorded in England for producer Gussie P, resulting in the single "Live By The Gun" in 1994, and an album, Rastafari Tell You, in 1995. Tracks from these sessions continued to be released into the 2000s.

Happy Heavenly 98th Birthday 22nd July 1927 - 26th November 1994 On Wednesday, 9th March 2022, the pioneering label Peckings Records was awarded a blue plaque by the Nubian Jak Community Trust.

Two years before Island Records started importing Jamaican music to England in the 1960s, George ' Peckings' Price, a visionary and passionate music enthusiast, brought the sound of the Island to London and beyond. His efforts were instrumental in introducing Jamaican music to a wider audience in the UK, laying the foundation for the vibrant reggae scene that exists today.

Music for Price started in Kingston, Jamaica, where he partnered with Coxsone Dodd, a legendary producer from Studio 1. Together, they set up their own sound system, which included members such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Prince Buster. Coxsone would travel to the US to collect music exclusives to stay ahead of their rivals, leaving Peckings in charge of bookings and arranging the dances. This partnership with Studio 1 was a crucial influence on the early development of Peckings Records.

In 1960, George decided to come to the UK, taking a suitcase of vinyls from Prince Buster and Coxsone. Peckings supplied UK-based Jamaican soundmen like Duke Vin, Count Suckle and Daddy Vego with RnB, Ska and Reggae records before opening his own record label and shop in 1973. He would go on to cater to legendary sound systems like Coxsone, Jah Shaka, Fatman, Hawkeye, Dub Vendor, Daddy Cool, and even young David Rodigan.

When George Price died in 1994, his sons Tony and Trevor, who had been involved in the shop, continued his legacy. Meanwhile, their two younger brothers – Chris and Duke – took the Peckings Records label to another level, expanding its reach and influence. Their collective efforts and dedication have not only preserved the label but also propelled it to new heights, solidifying its place in reggae history.

Peckings Records, a true game-changer, has been instrumental in breaking some of the most influential reggae artists of the last 2 decades, including Bitty McLean, Gappy Ranks, Peter Hunningale and Tarrus Riley. The label's extensive catalogue, with almost 100 records and albums since 1994, has earned it the prestigious titles of best label and producer at the British Reggae Industry Awards.

To commemorate almost 60 years since the founding of Peckings Records, a blue plaque was placed outside the original label and shop address in Hammersmith.

location: 142 Askew Rd, London W12 9AH

"Peckings Records is an oak tree that grew from the acorn of Jamaican music enthusiast George Price, whose love for the music of his island helped to create the phenomenon of Ska and Reggae in the United Kingdom." Founder of the Nubian Jak Community Trust, Jak Beula

"George' Peckings' Price made an immeasurable contribution to the evolution of Jamaican music in London with his tireless passion and enthusiasm for promoting Studio One music, a catalogue quite unlike any other. For this, and so much more, we all owe Peckings a huge debt of love and respect." DJ David Rodigan MBE OD

Happy 56th Birthday 27th May 1969 Tanto Metro (born Mark Wolfe in Kingston, Jamaica) acquired his stage name from working on the Metromedia sound system. He moved on to become part of Patrick Roberts' Shocking Vibes organization and released the solo album Ratings in 1995 which featured guest appearances from Beenie Man and Dean Fraser. He subsequently established a working partnership with tenor-voiced singer Devonte (born Wayne Passley), and the duo had a major hit in Jamaica in 1997 with "Everyone Falls in Love", which was followed by an album of the same name produced by Donovan Germain for penthouse Records; The single and album also sold well in the United States and Canada (the album topped the Billboard Top Reggae Albums Chart and the single reached number 6 in the Canadian singles chart), leading to a deal with Epic Records. The duo were compared to the similar duo of Chaka Demus and Pliers.

The duo's second album, The Beat Goes On, was released in 2001 by VP Records in Jamaica and Universal in the US.[2] The album reached number 4 on Billboard's Top Reggae Albums Chart in 2002.[6] A single from the album, "Give It to Her", reached number 85 in the Billboard Hot 100.[6] Beenie Man again guested and the duo repaid the compliment on his 2002 album Tropical Storm.

The duo released Musically Inclined in 2006, with a guest appearances from Courtney Melody and Morgan Heritage.[8] A quiet period for the duo followed, although a compilation in VP/Greensleeves Most Wanted series was released in 2009.[9][10] In 2008, Japanese musician Miliyah Kato released "Kono Mama Zutto Asa Made", a song that sampled "Everyone Falls in Love", which despite being a single B side became a hit in Japan, and was certified gold by the RIAJ.

They returned with the single "Already Know" in 2013, a Sly and Robbie-produced single. The album Request was scheduled to be released later that year but never did.

The album Sly and Robbie Presents Tanto Metro and Devonte followed in June 2015.
