Greetings,

Let me first wish each and everyone of you a safe and beautiful day.

For most people, the word “Research” carries very advanced vibes. Vibes that are full of complexities and difficult terminologies. A build up of unknown territories. A very dark room where you have to feel your way around for a door.

RESEARCH

I have always envisioned research to be the most primitive primal thing. An ancient philosophy that is knees deep into who we are. An extension of the most fundamental limb of our manhood: our curiosity.

We have always been creatures of questions and concerns. Every milestone in our evolution as a species was the product of our inability to stop questioning. We were built to wonder and investigate for reasons that are beyond the scope of this letter, but are nonetheless extraordinary.

I am the Arab woman who manifested this project years back. I saw this coming from a million kilometres in the fabric of time. This is the Robin Hood that I have always longed to create. A place where those who have no idea can start to have some. A place where those who have ideas can dare to dream even bigger. A little oasis in the desert of research that we grew up in. A place with no competition. A place of effective harmonised teamwork. A place that smells like unity and tastes like good coffee. I believe that nothing brings us together like productive science. I believe that the knowledgeable are humble and kind. I believe that growth is a collective act.

Having led international organisations and projects for the past years, I could see that we were late as a nation. We were honestly behind. This is to not curse the darkness but to merely light a candle. This is a step forward. A movement that has come. A torch to carry. An Arc to take us somewhere new.

WHY NEUROSURGERY?

Besides being my main focus and interest, Neurosurgery is by far the hardest field to publish in. However and with the right help, everything is attainable. If you have a map, you are less likely to get lost. We understand that it appears like the most challenging field to indulge in. However, we have orchestrated our system to help break it down into manageable portions of knowledge.

OUR ETHICAL CODE

As a person who defied all the repulsive discriminatory statements and behaviors in the field, I promise you nothing like that. I promise you a place that doesn’t look at your gender or race, a place that doesn’t care where you come from but helps you achieve the potential you see for yourself.

Discrimination will not be tolerated and everyone will be treated equally with no exceptions. Authorships will be protected and no exceptions will be tolerated. No form of corruption would be encouraged or tolerated. We respect you and your hard work. It is as simple as that.

There are no shortcuts to greatness. There are no pills for success. All you have to do is show up and find us there to help you. Let us walk the walk together.

Cordially,
Yusra Arafeh, MD
Founder & CEO of NRF

Our main aim is to help medical students and junior doctors gain valuable research experience and insights to the neurosurgical specialty.

We want to create a safe work environment that is based on mutual respect and interest amongst fellow researchers.

We want to focus on conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses on different topics spanning the current subspecialities of neurosurgery, in addition to broader topics relevant to the newest advancements in clinical neurosciences.

Alongside publications, we aim to create platforms that advocate for both research and neurosurgery through a variety of activities and projects, including; broadcasting neurosurgical events, lectures, journal clubs and so much more!
