An alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test measures the amount of ALP in the blood. ALP is an enzyme found in many parts of the body. Each part of the body produces a different type of ALP. Most ALP is found in the liver, bones, kidneys, and digestive system.
Why do you need to do this test?
The health care provider may order an alkaline phosphatase test as part of a routine checkup. Many conditions may affect ALP levels, so the test is often done with other blood tests.
In addition, if there are signs of a bone disease or liver damage, an alkaline phosphatase test might be requested.

Interpretation the result
Abnormal levels of ALP in the blood may be a sign of a wide range of health conditions, including liver disease, bone disorders, and chronic kidney disease. But an alkaline phosphatase test alone can’t identify , so other tests are usually needed to make a diagnosis.
Higher-than-normal levels of ALP in the blood may indicate a health concern with the liver or gallbladder. This could include a blockage in the bile ducts, gallstones, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and some forms of hepatitis.
High levels may also indicate a concern related to the bones such as rickets, Paget’s disease, bone cancer, or an overactive parathyroid gland.
Having lower-than-normal ALP levels in the blood can indicate a protein deficiency or Wilson’s disease. It may also signal malnutrition, which could be caused by celiac disease or an insufficient amount of certain vitamins and minerals.
Low ALP can also indicate a rare condition called hypophosphatasia. This causes fragile bones that can easily fracture and are slow to heal.
