📢 Translation Update – Principles of Behavior (8th Edition) 📢

The Japanese translation of Principles of Behavior (8th Edition) is now in its final stage. After months of collaborative work, revisions, and careful attention to detail, the book is expected to be published later this month or in October.

This project has been especially meaningful to me, as I was directly invited by Dr. Richard Malott himself to take on this translation. I feel truly honored, and I am deeply grateful to him, to my collaborators, and to everyone who has supported this journey.

My hope is that this translation will reach many readers in Japan and serve as an introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis, which has tremendous potential to improve lives and strengthen communities.

📚 Textbooks vs Research: Is the Smell of Food a US or a CS?

Most textbooks teach that the smell of food is an unconditioned stimulus (US) — something that naturally makes us salivate.

But when we go back to Pavlov’s own work and more recent research, the story looks different. Pavlov described the “psychic phase” of digestion — anticipatory secretions that happen before food enters the mouth. Researchers today argue that the smell of food gets its power through repeated pairings with actual eating, which makes it a conditioned stimulus (CS).

As Fine & Riera (2019) note:

“We revisit Pavlov’s findings and hypothesize that the evolutionarily-important sense of smell is the pathway most-likely determinant of feeding behavior in mammals.”

So while many textbooks call smell a US, it may be more accurate to see it as a CS — a learned signal that sets our digestive system in motion.
