Kitaoka Shrine/기타오카 신사/北岡神社

A shrine with deep historical connections to Gion.Located near Kumamoto Station at the foot of Mt. Hanaoka, Kitaoka Shrine is Kyushu’s oldest Gion shrine. Kumamoto Castle/구마모토성／熊本城

Much of Kumamoto Castle remains off limits as a result of the heavy damage it sustained in the Kumamoto Earthquakes of April 2016, but the first limited reopening of part of the castle is scheduled to start on October 5th, 2019. Access will be limited to Sundays and holidays and visitors will be able to view the outside of the castle keeps as they are being repaired.
