先日の障害学国際セミナー2025において文字情報保障の担当をしました。日本、韓国、中国、台湾からの参加者が障害学にまつわる多様なテーマで議論する、年に一度の場です。
音声同時通訳と日本手話通訳を使いながらの進行ですが、従来海外の参加者には音声通訳しかなかったため、海外からの聴覚障害者の参加には壁がありました。
そのため、今回新しい試みとして、人が打つ日本語文字情報保障を韓国語、繁体中文、簡体中文の3言語にAI翻訳する提案をして、文字でもある程度参加保障ができるようにしてみました。（本来的にはそれぞれの地元で入力者に打ってもらいたいですし、手話の問題は残っていますが…）
ただAIに任せるのではなく、各地からの留学生にも協力いただき重要な用語・誤訳されがちな用語の翻訳辞書を準備したりといった工夫もしています。
それでも時々誤訳が生じてしまうところはあったのですが、誰もが参加しやすいセミナーに一歩近づくことはできたのかなと思います。やってみてわかった課題も色々ありますが、次に向けて改善していきたいと思います。

We helped provide CART live caption at the East Asia Disability Studies Forum 2025.
This annual event brings together researchers and participants from Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan to discuss all kinds of topics in disability studies.
While the seminar offers spoken-language interpretation and Japanese Sign Language interpretation, it’s been hard for deaf and hard-of-hearing participants from abroad to join, since interpretation was only available in spoken form.
So this time, we tried something new —
we used Japanese live captions, which were then AI-translated into Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese!
(Of course, we’d love to have local captioners in each language someday — and sign language accessibility is still a big issue.)
We didn’t rely on AI alone — international students also helped build glossaries of key and easily mistranslated terms, which made a big difference.
There were still some translation hiccups, but I feel we took a small but real step toward a more inclusive, accessible seminar for everyone.
We also learned a lot for next time!
