長崎大学大学院 熱帯医学・グローバルヘルス研究科 At TMGH, we offer a unique curriculum for each course.

With globalization accelerating in the 21st century, there are growing concerns for the sustainable development of human society due to climate change and the aggravation of living environments caused by population growth and economic development. Under these circumstances, the term “Global Health” has emerged as a field encompassing topics such as communicable and non-communicable diseases occurr

ing regardless of geographical and/or economic boundaries. Nagasaki University established the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH) in order to meet the pressing need to cultivate professionals who are capable of helping to seek solutions to global health challenges by employing innovative, comprehensive, and trans-disciplinary approaches. TMGH is comprised of three courses;

1) Tropical Medicine course (MTM) for physicians with a keen interest in conducting research

2) International Health Development course (MPH) for those who intend to work as global health practitioners

3) Health Innovation course (MSc) for applicants who foresee pursuing a doctorate degree

All courses are conducted in English. MTM students will be involved in clinical research in a developing country, MPH students will participate in both a short term field training overseas (2-3 weeks) as well as a long term practicum (5-8 months) in a country of their choice, and MSc students are given a flexible program to pursue studies based on their background and interests. Students in all 3 courses at TMGH will not only be able to deepen their knowledge of their own particular fields, but also interact with one another through cross-course modules to have a full, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary understanding of the various aspects of Global Health.

11th MPH Class – 4th DRPH Class: Three-Week Term Field Trip – Day 10 – March 11, 2026: Final Day of the Field Trip

In the morning, we received a lecture from Mr. Aiichiro Kawamoto, the representative of Soshisha and a dedicated advocate for the activities of the Minamata Disease Patients' Association (founded by his father) and for efforts to convey the lessons of Minamata disease. Mr. Kawamoto described the current efforts as “activities to restore human dignity.” He also spoke about how change does not happen all at once, and that while incorporating new ideas requires courage and energy, it is essential to keep challenging oneself. His words made me feel that the activities he is undertaking will shape the future of Minamata City.

In the afternoon, we conducted group interviews with an uncertified patient and a community welfare commissioner.
An uncertified patient shared her experiences: what life was like growing up with a Minamata disease patient in her family, the discrimination and prejudice they faced due to Minamata disease, and their current feelings. Hearing these unimaginable real-life experiences put into words reaffirmed the depth of what we can learn. I want to express our renewed gratitude to those who share their experiences of the suffering that continues to this day.

Through this field trip, I gained invaluable insights only available locally from those living in the area, experiencing firsthand the present-day reality of Minamata over these ten days. To everyone at Soshisha who supported us during this period, residents in Minamata City, the TMGH faculty, and above all, my fellow TMGH 11th members—thank you all so much for these ten days!
Moving forward, we want to focus on compiling our group's learnings to articulate them clearly.

11th MPH Class – 4th DRPH Class: Three-Week Term Field Trip – Day 9 – March 10, 2026

This latest day of learning in Minamata was particularly intense. Balancing historical testimony with contemporary expertise, here are the highlights of our field research.

At 10:00 AM, our three groups gathered in the Buddhist prayer hall of the Aoshisha building to meet with a "storyteller," a member of a certified patient's family. Their poignant account retraced the history of Minamata disease and the hardships endured by victims and their loved ones. This session was followed by a rich exchange, allowing each group to delve deeper into their specific research topics.

After a lunch break, activities resumed at 12:40 PM at the Soshisha center with group interviews:

Group 1 (Local Governance): Interview with Mr. Kozo Matsuki, a former municipal official currently serving as a manager within the Ashikita District Medical Association. Mr. Matsuki shared his experience regarding past urban projects, emphasizing the crucial importance of social dialogue. It became clear that listening to citizens' needs was the cornerstone of rebuilding trust in Minamata.

Group 2 (Environment & Education): Meeting with Dr. Minoru Koga, Director of the Minamata Environmental Academia. We discussed the Japanese environmental legislative framework and current mercury control measures. As future public sector leaders, learning about their educational programs designed to pass these lessons on to future generations was particularly enlightening.

Group 3 (Sociology & Justice): Discussion with Associate Professor Akiko Ishihara. Through the lens of restorative justice, she presented her research on the mechanisms of social division within the community. Her analysis of restoring human relationships offered the group captivating theoretical and practical perspectives.

We concluded this day rich in emotions and knowledge at the Asahiso Hotel, where we shared an excellent dinner in a friendly atmosphere, conducive to debriefing among the groups.

11th batch MPH and DrPH – Short-term Field Trip Day 8, 9th March 2026

Today was Day 8 of the field trip to Minamata.

We visited the National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD), Ministry of the Environment.🌍 NIMD is located on high ground overlooking Minamata Bay. 🌊

NIMD is a comprehensive research institution dedicated to the study of Minamata disease and the broader impacts of mercury exposure on human health and the environment. It serves as a vital hub for sharing these crucial public health lessons with the global community.

We had the privilege of attending three insightful lectures that deepened our understanding of the epidemiological and social dimensions of environmental health issues. 📚

Lecture 1: The health impacts of mercury exposure and Minamata disease (Dr. Sakamoto)
Lecture 2: Mercury water quality monitoring practices from the past to the present
(Dr. Matsuyama)
Lecture 3: Sociological research and perspectives on Minamata disease (Ms. Harada)

Additionally, we received the results of the mercury hair tests we had submitted prior to our visit: a fascinating and practical look at their ongoing biomonitoring efforts.

We went to Fukuda Farm for lunch.
We had a delicious meal surrounded by nature.

11th batch MPH- Field Trip Day 7, 08th March, 2026

On Day 7 of our field activities in Minamata, Kumamoto Prefecture, we engaged with a certified Minamata disease patient (name withheld) at Soshisha, listening to his stories and gaining deeper insight into the history, struggles, life experiences, and resilience of the Minamata people and community, as well as the overall impact of the Minamata disease.

These experiences reminded us of the importance of environmental responsibility, justice for all affected people, and continued advocacy. Truly there are things that cannot be learned in books but through experiences and we have been opportunity to have a first-hand live experience in Minamata.

In the evening, we were welcomed to a delicious dinner and beautiful reception at the Asahisou Hotel (Japanese style). This amazing experience coupled with an onsen was by far the best and first time for most of us. We believe the memories made will be indelible in our hearts and minds.

Here are some photo highlights from the day.
