“Skin-to-skin is becoming a lost part of newborn care.”

We’re so quick to wrap babies in layers, pass them around for photos, and lay them in bassinets… but their very first need is us.

Skin-to-skin isn’t just sentimental. It’s science.
Studies show it stabilizes a newborn’s heart rate and breathing.
It regulates their body temperature better than an incubator.
It lowers cortisol (stress hormone) for both baby and parent.
It even boosts their immune system through exposure to healthy skin bacteria.

And yet, somewhere along the way, we traded this ancient instinct for convenience
the swaddle, the stroller, the swing.

When you hold a newborn skin-to-skin, you’re doing more than bonding.
You’re syncing your heartbeat with theirs.
You’re teaching their lungs how to breathe steady.
You’re jumpstarting their digestion, their immunity, their entire sense of safety in the world.

We can’t lose this.
Not when it’s one of the simplest, most powerful things we can give them.

As a doctor and midwife with over four decades of experience, I’ve seen how stepping into a hospital—putting on that gown, being confined to a bed—can shift the mindset of pregnancy from vitality to illness. You’re suddenly no longer the powerful, healthy person bringing life into the world—you’re a “patient.”

While hospitals can be necessary and life-saving for some births, the way care is often structured can unintentionally erode confidence and autonomy—turning what might have been a physiologic birth into medical chaos. What starts as a healthy, natural process too often becomes a medical drama.

My life’s work has been dedicated to reminding women to question norms, trust their bodies, and reclaim their power in birth. Birth is not an illness—it can be one of the most transformative, healthy journeys of your life.

Yet women are both experiencing escalating interventions and even birth trauma, while losing touch with the potential transformative power of birth.

This is why I created the Mama Pathway birth course: to help you reclaim your role as the expert on your body and baby, understand what to expect in any setting (hospital, birth center, or home), and feel empowered to make informed decisions every step of the way.

In Mama Pathway, we cover:

🌟 How to define—and get—a truly empowered birth, on your terms
🌟 How to decide on YOUR best place and people for birthing
🌟 The tools to feel confident and powerful in your choices—no matter the setting
🌟 Navigating the medical model while maintaining autonomy for the outcomes and experience you want

If you're planning a home or birth center journey—or a hospital birth—you deserve to know you're a whole, healthy mama, not a “patient,” even if complications arise.

Let’s shift the narrative, together. Join me in Mama Pathway! A new cohort starts this month, but you can begin classes and join the community TODAY! Link below.

Did you experience a mindset shift during pregnancy or birth? Was it empowering, mostly fear and anxiety—or do you need healing around your experience?

Let’s talk. ❤️ I'm listening.

Great information!

Ni**le shields CAN be a game-changer for SOME, but are they RIGHT for YOU?
Here is what you need to know: ⬇️

🔸 What are they?
Ni**le shield are thin, flexible silicone covers that fit over your ni**le during breastfeeding.

🔸 Why are they used?
They can help with latch, flat/inverted ni**les, and sore/cracked ni**les. BUT should be recommended and used under supervision from a lactation professional.

🔸 IMPORTANT
While ni**le shield can provide relief and assist with your lactation journey, they are generally intended for SHORT-TERM use. In addition, getting the RIGHT FIT is critical for effective use. An improperly fitted ni**le shield can cause more problems than it solves and proper usage can take some advisement/practice. This is why it is important to seek advice from a lactation professional before and during use.

🔸 KEY TAKEAWAY
Ni**le shields can be an effective and useful tool during your lactation journey. However, they are NOT for everyone and should NOT be prescribed or recommended just because you have painful ni**les or simply because you have flat/inverted ni**les. They SHOULD be prescribed by a lactation professional who is also working with you on a potential plan to wean from usage. In addition, if you are using for an ineffective or painful latch - the root cause of improper latch needs to be addressed for best results. Ni**le shields should not be recommended as a long-term option for painful/improper latch needs without further advisement.

Need help weaning from ni**le shield usage or would like to explore ni**les shields as an option for your lactation journey? Head over you our website and check for a chapter near you.

We have chapters all over the world with lactation professionals who can help. ⬇️

Walk into a room while I am supporting a birth and you might think that I am just sitting there doing nothing. I won’t be talking. I won’t be touching the client. I won’t be using anything in my bag.

So what am I doing exactly?

🪑 Watching mom’s breathing and sometimes breathing loudly alongside her to remind her to slow down her breath

🪑 Scanning mom’s body during the contraction to make sure that she isn’t holding any tension

🪑 Monitoring the temperature and lighting to create the peaceful environment that she desires

🪑 Calculating how long it has been since she emptied her bladder

🪑 Thinking about how long she has been in her current position and thinking about the next position that she might try

🪑 Timing contractions to see if they are longer, stronger and closer together

🪑 Thinking about when mom and her partner last had a snack

🪑 Reviewing her preferences to make sure that everything is going according to her plan

🪑 Giving the couple space to connect on an intimate level (allowing for oxytocin) and/or guiding the partner to be the lead support

🪑 Updating notes and capturing labor flow

Sometimes just being fully present is enough. Sometimes just knowing I am there in close proximity is all mom needs to be able to relax and focus on what she needs to do. Sometimes just holding space for them in an unbiased manner allows for a noticeable shift in the energy of the room.

And the list goes on….
