I’m now a Myo Munchee practitioner!

What is a Munchee?

Myo Munchee was created by Australian dentist Kevin Bourke in the 1960’s. Invented with the idea of improving oral hygiene and periodontal disease, he quickly realized that the chewing motion of the Munchee was helping to form craniofacial muscles in patients.

CHEWING IS IMPORTANT!

In today’s culture, so many people opt for liquid supplements; food pouches, protein shakes and smoothies. Chewing helps form our facial structures which promotes a healthy airway.

I’m excited to become a Myo Munchee practitioner to help patients correct oral habits, promote facial growth, optimize their airway and live a better life.

Started a new book today. One chapter in and I am AMAZED by the *DYSEVOLUTION* of the human body.

We always hear evolution… what is dysevolution? Dysevolution is when a species changes over time but in which they are becoming LESS suited to survival skills and the changes persist from generation to generation (Lieberman, D.).

This book dives deep into the way we breathe and the importance of taking QUALITY breaths.

It states that “90 percent of us is breathing incorrectly and that this failure is either causing or aggravating a laundry list of chronic diseases”.

Take a minute to think about your breathing. Think about how you feel on a daily basis. Is your breathing contributing to your deterioration?

While I love dental hygiene, myofunctional therapy is opening new doors that I didn’t think would be possible.

Learning about tethered oral tissues, airway function, and quality of life have brought me back to my own journey with my boys.

I remember being a first time mom trying to breastfeed and the pain that came with it. Nursing was painted as this beautiful and magical picture; that it would happen so naturally. For many, this is not reality.

The pain I felt with latching, the push for tongue tie evals, ni**le shields, weighted visits and help from lactation consultants while trying to navigate being a first time mom was more frustrating than I can put into words. Maybe even defeating. I remember providers telling me it was fine and the “pain gets better”. While the pain did get better, my concerns were never validated.

I want to be the voice for patients, especially mothers and infants. Help should not be this hard. Not only will I be focusing on myofunctional therapy but later this year I will be adding on infant feeding specialty.

There are so many secondary and underlying issues that we could help address if we let our patients mouth and body do the talking.

So many changes over the last few DECADES in our diet which has impacted our craniofacial growth, oral function, airway function.

Everyone loves the applesauce/food pouches for kids (guilty 🙋🏼‍♀️), smoothies/shakes, juicing and anything that is convenient. But proper chewing improves our facial development and function.

Let’s talk about the power of diet!

Soft foods hinder proper chewing, affecting facial growth and development. It’s crucial for kids to adopt whole foods for a brighter oral future. But it doesn’t stop there! Infant feeding, maternal nutrition, oral posture, nasal breathing, and early-life sucking habits are all vital in shaping dental health and jaw development.

👃👄 The Connection Between Mouth and Nose 👃👄

Mouth Breathing: When nasal breathing is blocked, the mouth steps in, but it’s not ideal. Chronic mouth breathing can lead to dryness, bad breath, and dental issues.

Oral Health: Your mouth is more than just for eating. Neglecting oral hygiene can affect your whole body, from heart health to diabetes.

Speech and Communication: Clear speech relies on proper tongue and lip movements, controlled by the mouth.

👃 Nose 👃

Primary Breathing Route: Your nose is nature’s air filter, warming and humidifying air for optimal lung health.

Olfactory Function: Smell is linked to taste, making your nose crucial for enjoying food and detecting scents.

Immune Defense: Your nasal passages are frontline defenders, trapping and neutralizing harmful particles to keep you healthy.

Regulation of Airflow: Nose regulates airflow, ensuring you get the right amount of oxygen during all activities.

👃🏼Does anyone else go through the brutal allergy cycle of being stuffy and congested? There are a few tricks to unclog a stuffy nose to promote nasal breathing.

When nasal breathing is hindered, even temporarily, our jaws drop and our tongues shift forward to compensate, impacting not just our airways but also our overall posture and health. 😮

That’s why nasal hygiene is important! Keeping our nasal passages clear and healthy not only helps us breathe easier but also supports better jaw alignment and overall well-being.

If Nasal hygiene doesn’t work for you, it may be a structural component. Get an evaluation from an ENT!

Tongue posture Tuesday 😝

Did you know that your tongue is supposed to be able to suction to the roof of your mouth? When suctioned properly, it will be impossible to breathe through your mouth. Some people may feel tension or discomfort in their face, neck, or tongue when doing so which is not normal and means there is limited function aka disfunction.

The roof of the mouth is the floor of our nasal cavity. If our tongue is not in the right position, our palate and nasal cavity cannot develop to their full potential.

What does your tongue look like? Your entire tongue should suction cup to the roof of your mouth without spilling over to your top teeth.

Feel free to share a pic or tell us how it suctions.
