THE LINK BETWEEN CHANGES IN SEASON AND OCCASIONAL HAIR LOSS
In autumn 🍁, the trees lose their leaves, and the flowers make way for new ones to bloom in the spring. The plant’s life cycle has a lot in common with the hair’s life cycle. The latter is comprised of three distinct phases (anagen, catagen and telogen) during which the hair grows, is maintained, regresses and then falls.
In any case, it´s important to underline that hair loss due to seasonal changes is minimal compared to other factors that may cause the falling out of hair, or even baldness; these factors include genetics, lifestyle (stress, diet, tiredness...), using certain techniques or products aggressive with our hair, or side effects caused by some diseases or by some medications.
Normally, there is a seasonal hair loss in spring; however, seasonal hair loss in autumn is more pronounced during the so-called seasonal effluvium (a type of telogen effluvium); besides, female seasonal hair loss becomes more evident than in males.
Seasonal hair loss can appear at any time, even if you have never been affected before. Help slow it down by adopting some simple, daily habits. Start by paying attention to the hair care you use. Opt for shampoo that is gentle on your hair and scalp. Keep your hair down or loose rather than in tight updos or braids, which can cause the hair fiber to become fragile. And, most importantly, pay closer attention to your diet. Vitamins and minerals play a fundamental role in maintaining a normal hair cycle, especially with regard to renewing the hair bulb’s matrix cells, which divide rapidly. Sufficient amounts must reach the scalp in order to provide it with enough nourishment and to encourage proper hair growth. During changes in season, dietary supplements containing B vitamins, sulfur amino acids, zinc, iron and selenium can be an effective complementary treatment against seasonal hair loss.
