After years of and industry stagnation due to the bubble collapse, corporate Japan is seizing the opportunity to lead the charge in at least one of the emerging 4th gen tech fields.

JAL announced it has officially begun the process of formalizing the country's first eVTOL, aircraft ride-sharing program. With it, the company has set out to determine the required infrastructure and certification requirements to realize the Japanese "Air Mobility Revolution" .

To see this future realized, JAL reached an agreement with Avalon, an international aircraft leasing company , committing to purchase or lease up to 50 eVTOL aircraft (air taxi) with an option for 50 more units.

Some notes on the deal:

1. Once completed, the deal along with the projected 2025 debut of the ride-sharing service, Japan would have one of the first commercially realized eVTOL networks in the world

2. The aircraft leased through Avalon will actually be the VA-X4 model, developed by UK based, Vertical Aerospace

3. The companies have agreed to work together to get the aircraft certified by Japan's Civil Aviation bureau

4. The model, co-designed with Rolls Royce, boasts a range of 100 miles and up to 200 mph, all clean powered flight.

An often underestimated claim from Vertical about its VA-X4 model is that it will be almost completely silent in flight, with the company saying its 100 x quieter than modern helicopters.

Japan has the opportunity to be a world leader in the adoption , implementation and of AAM systems. If the current pace of developments, regulatory easing, investor interest and innovation continues, we can easily see this Japanese "Air Mobility Revolution" coming to fruition.

Another auto giant to enter the projected $2.6 billion AAM market.

Honda has officially announced plans to enter into the AAM with production of its first eVTOL model. Taking a different approach to competitors, the Honda aircraft will utilize hybrid-electric to capture the long-range, intercity travel market.

Some notes on the announcement:

1. The gas turbine hybrid will reportedly have a range of up to 400km, far surpassing the standard 100km range found with competitor models.

2. Current and battery limitations are cited as the reason for their hybrid approach.

3. The revealed model features a lift-plus-cruise with 8 lift props on booms above and 2 ducted props at the rear (shown in the picture)

Honda will inform its eVTOL approach from its past work with HondaJet

The company also laid out a vision for a transportation ecosystem involving "Honda Mobility Hubs". Honda is working towards test flights in 2025 of their aircraft.

This development continues a string of news coming out of Japan regarding Air Mobility. Strong and development of these systems could help support Japanese economic recovery in the coming decades.

Air taxi's move closer to reality in Japan with a new deal between Marubeni Corporation and UK's Vertical Aerospace.

Both groups have agreed to explore the use of powered, sustainable, advanced aerial mobility solutions in Japan, with a preliminary contract for Marubeni to purchase up to 200 of Vertical's aircraft.

Some notes on the agreement :

1. Marubeni's purchase helps develop the growing Japan AAM by adding to Verticals already $5.4 bn order list

2. The two groups will now jointly begin evaluating eVTOL requirements and more within japan, including route planning, , infrastructure and capacity while also engaging other interested parties

3. By working with Marubeni, Vertical hopes to accelerate its Japanese market entry while providing Japanese commuters a safer, cleaner, faster, green alternative to short haul commuting

With recent deals in both Japan and China, the urban air mobility market is rapidly gaining momentum here in Asia. The Marubeni deal also aligns with the Japanese government's ambitions to have air taxis in operation by the 2025 world expo. In keeping with the SDGs, this initiative will help Japan's government meet its 2040 carbon neutrality goals.

Moving forward, the focus will be placed on overcoming some of the hurdles in scale operations of eVTOL here in japan such as lack of infrastructure, regulatory environment, public trust and more.

JAL and ANA have announced official plans to boost efficiency in rural areas with a joint service.

The two groups see the service as a way to support local provision and disaster preparedness while also building out local infrastructure in remote locations.

Some notes on the announcement :

1. A trial project was run in march in the Goto islands to deliver medical supplies with the drone operating at 100 km/h

2. The reduced the travel time for the supplies from 45 min to 10 minutes when compared to traditional methods

3. A team of 15 members has been assebled ranging from pilots, flight mechanics, aviation professionals and more to oversee its growth

4. The service was given more attention as a way to grow revenue after a strong fall off in earnings due to the COVID pandemic

Overall this will prove to be beneficial for the overall drone in Japan. When larger groups in the country get involved, we rapidly see development that would have otherwise taken years.

The key to watch going forward is how the government will support the local drone players in the of this sector? Focusing on the corporate side runs the risk of crushing a blossoming industry in the country.
