【プレスリリース】睡眠アプリの記録から睡眠パターンを分類し労働生産性との関連を検証
睡眠に関するスマートフォンアプリの利用者約8万人の大規模データから、睡眠の特徴と労働生産性との関連を調査しました。その結果、「社会的時差ぼけ型」や「不眠傾向型」は労働生産性が低い可能性が示唆されました。本研究は、適切な睡眠時間の重要性や不規則生活がもたらす影響を示唆すると同時に、スマートフォンアプリによって就業者の睡眠状態を把握し、仕事中のパフォーマンス低下を予測できる可能性を示すものであり、個人に合わせた睡眠改善や職場環境づくりへの応用が期待されます。

【Press Release】Sleep Duration, Timing, and Quality: How Smartphone Data Predict Labor Productivity
Researchers at University of Tsukuba examined the association between sleep characteristics and workplace productivity using real-world sleep data from approximately 80,000 users (spanning more than 2 million nights) of sleep-tracking smartphone applications. Their findings suggest that individuals classified as “social jet lag” and “insomnia-prone” types experience significantly reduced productivity.

【News】11月15日（土）つくば国際会議場にて第14回 世界トップレベル研究拠点プログラム（WPI）サイエンスシンポジウム 「未来を変える科学の眼」が開催されました。
本シンポジウムでは、WPI全拠点が一堂に会したブース展示のほか、高校生とWPIの研究者たちによるポスター発表や、若手研究者によるサイエンストークが行われ、ポスター発表の高校生４９名を含む２４４名が参加しました。
IIISからは、小柳伊代 特任助教（坂口研究室）が若⼿研究者によるサイエンストークに登壇し、野間紘久さん（中島研究室）がポスター発表を行いました。

【News】The 14th WPI Science Symposium -New Scientific eyes for changing the future- was held at Tsukuba, Ibaraki on Saturday November 15th.
At this symposium, high school students and WPI researchers gave poster presentations, young researchers gave lectures, and each center set up booth displays. The 14th symposium was a great success with 244 people, including 49 high school students in attendance.
From IIIS, Dr.Iyo Koyanagi (Sakaguchi Lab) presented at the Young Researchers' Science Talk, gave a lecture titled “How the Sleeping Brain Supports Memory.”　In addition, Mr. Hirohisa Noma (Nakajima Lab) gave a poster presentation titled “A New Form of Psychotherapy: The Development and Societal Dissemination of AI Counselors.”

【プレスリリース】感情と覚醒をつなぐ新たな神経経路を発見
感情と覚醒をつなぐ新しい神経経路として、大脳辺縁系の一部である分界条床核のニューロン（神経細胞）が、中脳の深中脳核の興奮性ニューロンを介して覚醒を誘発することを明らかにしました。この経路はストレスによる睡眠障害を引き起こす神経基盤の一つである可能性があります。

私たちの感情やストレスは、眠りや目覚めに大きな影響を与えます。これまで、感情を司る脳の扁桃体やその周辺構造が覚醒に関与することは知られていましたが、その具体的な神経メカニズムはよく分かっていませんでした。 本研究では、脳の扁桃体の延長部にあたる分界条床核（BNST）のGABAというアミノ酸を神経伝達物質とするニューロン（GABA作動性ニューロン）が、中脳の深中脳核（DpMe）に存在する興奮性ニューロン（グルタミン酸作動性ニューロン）を介して、睡眠中のマウスを瞬時に覚醒させる神経経路を発見しました。
BNSTのGABA作動性ニューロンを光遺伝学的に刺激すると、ノンレム睡眠中のマウスが即座に覚醒し、その際DpMeニューロンの活動が急上昇することが観察されました。さらにDpMeのグルタミン酸作動性ニューロンを選択的に除去すると、この覚醒反応が著しく減弱しました。
本研究はさまざまな神経操作技術を駆使し、感情と覚醒を結ぶ新しい神経経路を詳細に解析したものであり、これらの結果は、精神的な刺激（恐怖やストレスなど）が睡眠を中断させる神経基盤を初めて明らかにするとともに、ストレス関連の不眠症や気分障害の治療標的の発見につながると期待されます。

【Press Release】A Newly Discovered Neural Pathway Links Emotional Stimuli to Wakefulness

Researchers at the University of Tsukuba have identified a previously uncharacterized neural circuit that directly links emotional processing to arousal. In the pathway, GABAergic neurons in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST)—part of the extended amygdala—promote wakefulness by activating glutamatergic neurons in the deep mesencephalic nucleus (DpMe) of the midbrain. This circuit may be a key mechanism underlying stress-induced sleep disturbances.
