Another Success Story from one of our Solider at TAP program at Torii Station

Do you feel like you had enough time to complete TAP, create a transition plan and execute it?

Even though I came in late, I still had enough time to pull the most important information out of it.

Do you feel like you came in early enough to the program?

BIG NO. I came in at 7 months. WAY TOO LATE.

Which workshop(s) had the largest impact for you?

Boots 2 Business hit me the hardest. At the end of the day, business isn’t hard. It just involves selling a product or service. There’s also a bunch of convoluted paperwork you do to protect yourself from the IRS. I took a TON of notes for future use.

How was the Internship experience? Advice for others?

I did not opt for the internship, but looking back, I should have done it just to get a head start mentally adjusting to civilian work life.

What advice can you offer transitioning Soldiers going through the program now? What is one thing you wish you had done differently? What lessons have you learned?

1. Take advantage of every benefit you have. You have no choice but to finish TAP, so get something out of it. Spread the word through your unit so other Soldiers don’t make the mistake of showing up late. You fail them by not doing so.

2. I wish I would have more carefully considered healthcare and the BDD program with VA. It’s specially geared for veterans, so you have a much easier time going through the process for disability than non-veterans.

3. I’ve learned that resume writing is an art. Even though you do your best to show how you qualify for the job, you never know what personality looks at it and interprets it. Therefore, keep at it and get used to speaking professionally about your work experience until you can sell yourself confidently to anyone you meet.
