FREE CANCER SCREENING

Residents of Baringo will on the 16th and 17th January 2025 have access to free cancer screening services in medical camps to be stationed in Marigat, Mogotio, and Emining.

The services to be offered will include screening for breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostrate cancer as well as consultations on various cancer related issues.

While appealing for residents to take advantage of the free medical camps, the Chief Officer Preventive and Promotive Health Mr. Evans Rutto said early detection of cancer makes it more treatable and manageable.

"As we advocate for healthy lifestyles that is key in cancer prevention, we urge our residents to turn up to be screened, and make health check ups a routine because when diseases including cancers are discovered early, treatment and quick full recovery is a high possibility." Rutto said.

Coming in January, the cancer awareness month, the initiative is a partnership between the County Government of Baringo, African Organisation for Cancer Research and Advocacy and other partners, and is part of efforts to encourage citizens to do routine screening to ascertain their health status.

World Contraception Day coming up, September 26

Health facilities in Baringo County are offering free reproductive health services as the world observes the World Contraception month, which will culminate in the World Contraception Day on September 26th.

The WCD whose theme is "Contraception Choices: The power is in my hands," will be observed with a statistical backdrop of indicators pointing to the need to put more effort to upscale interventions towards improving awareness and access to Family Planning.

According to KDHS survey 2022 , uptake of family planning in Kenya stands at 57 % while Baringo is at 48%; fertility trends for Baringo stand at 4.4 average number of children per woman as compared to an national average of 3.4. The National teenage pregnancy in Kenya is at 15 % while Baringo registers a high of 20%.

The World Contraception Day is a worldwide awareness day that has been observed on 26 September every year for the past sixteen years. During this day, local, national and global healthcare organizations come together to raise awareness on contraception in the general population. The Day is key in the spread of awareness of various contraceptive options to individuals, especially young men and women, regarding Family Planning and Reproductive Health.

In marking the this day, Baringo has expressed commitment to further improve the Family Planning indicators and enhance reproductive health outcomes, with the Department of Health Services working closely with National Government Agencies and Partners to ensure availability of family planning commodities. This involves proper forecasting for FP commodities to match demand and supply, as well as capacity building of health care workers in order to improve their reproductive health knowledge and skills.

The County has also sustained efforts to avail requisite FP equipment as it employs Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and outreaches to create awareness both to take services close to clients and to drive demand for reproductive health services.

The World Contraception Day 2024 will be observed on September 26th at the Baringo County Referral Hospital in Kabarnet.

County Hospitals get Shs 122 Million in Oxygen Project Partnership

The process of implementing Shs 122 million worth of oxygen projects in Baringo County health facilities are at various stages of ex*****on. The central nature of the projects is underscored by the fact that oxygen is classified as a drug when used for medical purposes, because it is prescribed, administered in specific doses, and has therapeutic effects, just like any other medication.

The installation of two 200l/Min capacity Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen plants in Kabartonjo and Chemolingot Sub County Hospitals at a cost of Shs 60 million is at completion stages, while oxygen piping in Baringo County Referral Hospital, Eldama Ravine and Mogotio Sub County Hospitals, and the supply of 310 oxygen cylinders, splitters and Manifolds is complete.

The significant investment is one among the many fruits of partnerships, which have been spearheaded by H.E Governor Benjamin Cheboi across the devolved sectors in Baringo.

β€œThis oxygen project will enhance the ability of the beneficiary facilities to provide high-quality, reliable, and timely medical care, improving overall patient outcomes and operational efficiency.” Cheboi said, adding that the County is making good steps in enhancing service delivery within its healthcare system.

The Oxygen project scheduled for completion by December 2024 is funded by the Global Fund and is being executed in partnership between the County Government of Baringo, the Ministry of Health, with Amref as the implementing partner.

Mass Distribution of Mosquito Nets kicks off

Residents in Baringo South, Mogotio and Eldama Ravine Sub Counties are advised to visit their centers of registration with their National Identity Cards in order to collect their
Long Lasting Insecticidal Treated Mosquito Nets (LLINs).

The Department of Health Services and its partners have rolled out mass distribution of 290,000 (LLINs) in areas, a day after successful engagement with, and sensitization of LLINs distribution stakeholders which brought together both National and County administration officers, facility in-charges and Sub County Health Management Teams.

This intervention complements other initiatives to fight Malaria, including integrated medical outreaches in Tiaty East and Tiaty West Sub Counties where malaria outbreaks have been reported.

The Department has made good progress in its efforts to secure more supplies from partners and other malaria low prevalence Counties and is well on course to geting the situation completely under control.

High Voltage Transformer ready for installation at BCRH

Baringo County Referral Hospital has moved to upgrade its electricity supply infrastructure to meet the facility's growing consumption.

This is after the Referral Hospital received a 1000 KVA transformer on Monday from the Kenya Power Company to cover its power needs, an upgrade from the current 300KVA transformer.

The CEC for Health Services Dr Solomon Sirma said the transformer will be sufficient to adequately supply electricity to power equipment and for lighting purposes in both the current facility as well as for the upcoming modern surgical block.

"This acquisition is key in ensuring we have sufficient power to sustain all range of services that depend heavily on electricity, especially as we prepare to officially open the new, multi-storey surgical block." Dr. Sirma said.

The upgrade was made following an energy audit by an EPRA certified entity in June 2024.
