The project uses dance and sports activities as a tool for community development. Zama Zama Dance and Development Centre is a community development organisation that uses dance to engender broad socio‐economic development, while also effecting positive social change. Founded in 2012 in the Mathare area which is one of Africa’s largest and poorest slums, Zama Zama dance is a pioneer in linking of dance with social improvement and community development activities such as slum garbage cleanups, environmental improvement and HIV/AIDs prevention. Today, the organisation continues to use dance activities, particularly African Contemporary, Modern Dance and Hip Hop, as an innovative and effective way to get youth involved in helping themselves and their communities. In addition, over the years the organisation has expanded its activities to, health education, multimedia, design, Journalism and photography and HIV/AIDS Prevention. Zama Zama Dance and Development centre has 3 active dance and talent development community centres throughout the Mathare Valley and neighbouring slums.
