As we come to the end of November, we continue recognizing our resilient Burn ๐ฅ survivors and Burn care heroes. Severe burns are often fatal, those who survive the injury have to deal with life long difficulties involving daily physical function, scars, contractures and even depression.
Meet my patient Mr J, an electrician and a family man. His life radically changed one morning after an explosion due to a faulty high voltage line he was working on. Almost half of his body was deeply burnt, he received 50 units of blood and 10 surgeries in 3 months. I saw resilience and optimism in Mr J, qualities I got to admire given what he was dealing with (you need to see severe burns to fully understand this). The nursing team did an amazing job changing dressing as often as needed till reconstructive surgeries were completed.
This week Mr J was finally discharged to go home - at least he learned to walk again. As a team, our hearts are filled with gratitude because the story doesnโt always end this way.
Thereโs a special group of people , our partners, who donate some advanced equipment and applications that ordinarily would not be accessible to patients like Mr J. Their benevolence doesnโt go unnoticed.
Annually, burns result in more than 7.1 million injuries, the loss of almost 18 million disability adjusted life years (DALYs) and more than 250,000 deaths worldwide. More than 90% of the burden of burn injury is borne by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Together we can change this narrative.
