MTRH/ UG County Mark World Cancer Day 2023

Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital (MTRH), with County Government of Uasin Gishu (UG) today joined the rest of the world in marking annual World Cancer Day.

MTRH Management, Staff, UG County, and residents walked from the Hospital through Eldoret Town to the Nandi Gardens for a Cancer Awareness and Sensitization of the Public/ Citizenry. This year's event was marked under the theme: "Close the Care Gap."

The walk was led by the CEO MTRH Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS, and the CEC-M for Health Uasin Gishu County, Dr. Sammy Kotut, who represented the Governor, Uasin Gishu County, H.E Jonathan Bii.

The most common causes of cancer deaths globally are Lung, Liver, Colorectal, Stomach, and Breast. Among Non-Communicable Disease related deaths, cancer is the second leading cause of death accounting for 7% of overall national mortality after cardiovascular diseases. A bulk of the deaths do occur in the Low, Middle Income Countries, Kenya included.

The leading cancers in Kenya in women are; cervical, breast and oesophagus while in men, prostate, Kaposi sarcoma and oesophagus are the most common. In children, blood cancers lead.

In his speech, the CEO Dr. Aruasa, said the Hospital ,through the Government of Kenya (GoK), has made robust investments for the screening, treatment and management of all cancers adding that no Kenyan needs to travel outside the country for specialized cancer treatment.

He strongly discouraged use of alcohol and other forms of drugs noting that they either cause or catalyze development of cancers.

Dr. Beatrice Melly, the Ag. Director of Haemato-Oncology, added that the Hospital offers stop Oncology Services. She added that this year, the conversation is about closing the gap in access to care in oncology; through education and sensitization.

MTRH offers the following Oncology services; Haemato-Oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, chemotherapy, brachytherapy, cancer screening, counselling, day-care blood transfusion and palliative care in addition to cancer research and oncology training. The Hospital also offers free screening for breast and cervical cancer.

The CEC-M Health, Dr. Sammy Kotut said the County will continue partnership with MTRH in primary healthcare including screening for cancers.

He reiterated the need for sustained public health education on the contributing factors for cancer and the need for change in lifestyle to a much healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Aruasa added that most Cancers can be prevented through prevention and early detection adding that the Hospital sees 16,000 cases annually.

Dr. Aruasa thanked the Government for its Universal Healthcare innovation targeting the indigent population.

The GoK support includes training, research and resource support - including Human Resources for Health - with regard to Cancer awareness and management.

"The Government will expedite the construction of the new International Multi-Speciality MTRH at Kiplombe, Eldoret, where Oncology (both Adult and Pediatric Oncology) will have its own Centre of Excellence.

He also thanked the Government of France through the GoK for their support liver cancer surgeries and high level equipping of MTRH Riley Mother & Baby Hospital, Shoe4Africa Children Hospital and Laundry department.

The Governor, Uasin Gishu County Jonathan Bii in a speech read by CEC Health, committed to closing the existing gaps in Human Resources for Health, improving the existing infrastructure and ensuring the existence of sufficient pharmaceutical products as well as strengthening primary healthcare.

Did You Know?: The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is an extremely common infection that causes 99.9% of all cervical cancers. However, it can be prevented through risk reduction strategies and HPV vaccination.

Did you know that can be prevented and treated if detected early? Simple screening methods for cervical cancer are available at a government facility near you. Ask your health service provider.

All women are at risk of developing cervical cancer and should be screened. Cervical cancer mostly affects women between 35 to 49 years. Screening is recommended for all women aged 25 to 49 years.

What is cervical cancer? It is a type of cancer that arises from the cervix, the birth canal through which the baby passes during childbirth. It is a consequence of long-term persistent infection with human papillomavirus.

It takes approximately 10-15 years for women with changes on the cervix caused by HPV to develop cancer hence the importance of regular screening. Ask your health provider about screening and treatment services available at your nearest health facility today.

CS Health : MTRH is a success story

The Cabinet Secretary Health, Madam Nakhumicha S. Wafula has lauded Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and its leadership for being a model institution in quality healthcare service to Kenyans.

" I am proud of the successful stories emanating from MTRH including the recent successful Kidney Transplant of a patient referred from Burundi. I am impressed with your focused leadership and service delivery. Be assured of our support."

The CS Health made the remarks during a familiarization tour of MTRH on Tuesday 3rd January, 2023.

During the briefing at CEO's Boardroom, CS gave an undertaking of Government commitment to construct a 2000-bed Multi-Specialty MTRH at Kiplombe, near Eldoret Airstrip.

She lauded MTRH for positive labour relations with staff and workers’ unions- Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union
(KMPDU), Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), Kenya Union of Domestic Hospitality and Health Allied (KUDHEIHA) and Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO).

She called on other healthcare institutions to emulate MTRH so Kenyans can enjoy standardized and quality healthcare across the country.

The CS pledged reforms at National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) while forging a close-working relationship with County Governments in healthcare delivery particularly on Primary Healthcare (PHC).

Speaking during the same function, Uasin Gishu Governor, H.E. Jonathan Bii commended the good working relationship with MTRH on health matters expressing gratitude on AMPATH Revolving Pharmacy now back in operations in the County facilities.

In his remarks, MTRH Board Chair Mr. Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, MBS appreciated support from National Government, Ministry of Health and Development Partners for getting MTRH to be a brand in healthcare.

MTRH CEO, Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa MBS, EBS reiterated that quality of care at MTRH has been realized through; prudent utilization of resources, investment in Human Resources for Health (HRH) , Modernization of Equipment & Infrastructure, Capacity building for Clinical and Corporate Staff and forging Strategic Partnerships and Alliances.

The CS later toured Renal Unit, Hemato-Oncology and Radiotherapy Service points.

Today 16th December, 2022, a team from the Directorate of Mental Health and Rehabilitative Services conducted a community-based alcohol support group meeting in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County as part of Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital (MTRH) Population Health outreaches. Towards realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), MTRH continues to partner with Counties to enhance access to the full continuum of healthcare services from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care.

The team, led by Dr. Edith Kwobah, Ag. Director,Mental Health and Rehabilitative Services is seeking to strengthen and collaborate with development partners and self help groups to develop, adopt and implement better support systems to deter Alcohol and Substance Abuse ; beginning at the family unit. Alcohol and Substance Abuse have adverse effects on individual's productivity, health and safety hence the need for collaborative efforts to eliminate this harm in our society.

MTRH and MTRH CEO Feted at 2022 KISM Awards

Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital (MTRH) CEO Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS was yesterday feted at the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management (KISM) SPURS Excellence Awards,2022 as the “Unsung Hero of the Year’ for his solid work ethics and governance practices in management of a public procurement entity.

While accepting the award, Dr. Aruasa attributed this recognition to personal commitment, zeal and transparency in public procurement process, leading to huge transformation at MTRH.

The Hospital was also the 1st Runner Up in ‘ICT Innovations’ category at the Awards ceremony held at the Carnivore Simba Salon, Nairobi, on 2nd December, 2022.

About Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) was started in 1916 with a bed capacity of 60 to cater for the Africans Health Needs. It later served as a District Hospital before attaining referral status vide Legal Notice No. 98 of 12th June 1998 of the State Corporations Act (Cap 446). Currently, the Hospital serves as a level six Hospital offering outpatient, inpatient, and specialized healthcare services.

MTRH is located along Nandi Road in Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu County (310 Kilometers Northwest of Nairobi). The Hospital serves residents of Western Kenya, parts of Eastern Uganda and Southern Sudan with a population of approximately 24 Million.

The Hospital incorporates the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH)- which is the most comprehensive HIV/Aids programme in sub-Saharan Africa with presence in 22 satellite sites across Western Kenya and over 150,000 patients put under Anti-retrovirals (ARVs). The Hospital also runs Centre for Assault Recovery – Eldoret (CAR-E) that caters for gender-based and victims of sexual violence.
