CHILDREN AND ADULTS OF GARISSA AND ITS ENVIRONS BENEFITED FROM A FREE CARDIAC CAMP.
A cardiac medical camp organized by Garissa County Referral Hospital in partnership with Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital has benefited children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and adults suffering from heart-related complications.
The medical team which included a paediatric cardiac doctor and an adult cardiac doctor spent a day long at our Referral Hospital performing free heart screenings for children and adults from low-income families in Garissa and its environs.
On March 18, 2023, the hospital screened a total of 62 Children and 53 adults diagnosing 57 of the children with various congenital heart abnormalities and 6 of the adults with various heart disorders. In total, 16 patients both adults and children were found to require interventional heart surgery or trans catheter repair.

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect worldwide affecting one out of every 100 children. According to Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Health, at least 200,000 children under the age of 18 suffer from heart disease with over 10,000 babies dying as a result.
