CHILDREN AND ADULTS OF GARISSA AND ITS ENVIRONS BENEFITED FROM A FREE CARDIAC CAMP.

A cardiac medical camp organized by Garissa County Referral Hospital in partnership with Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital has benefited children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and adults suffering from heart-related complications.

The medical team which included a paediatric cardiac doctor and an adult cardiac doctor spent a day long at our Referral Hospital performing free heart screenings for children and adults from low-income families in Garissa and its environs.

On March 18, 2023, the hospital screened a total of 62 Children and 53 adults diagnosing 57 of the children with various congenital heart abnormalities and 6 of the adults with various heart disorders. In total, 16 patients both adults and children were found to require interventional heart surgery or trans catheter repair.

Dr. Hawa Boi, CEO of Garissa County Referral Hospital expressed gratitude to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital team for the successful cardiology clinic partnership.

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect worldwide affecting one out of every 100 children. According to Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Health, at least 200,000 children under the age of 18 suffer from heart disease with over 10,000 babies dying as a result.

SUCCESSFUL STORY OF THE FIRST THORACIC SURGERY IN GARISSA.

Mohamed Bare Dagane 45-year-old was brought to the facility by his relatives on the night of 4th Sept. 2022.

Mohamed had stab wounds on his chest at the time he was wheeled to the emergency wing of the facility. He was diagnosed with penetrating chest trauma of multiple stab wounds.

Intraoperatively, the patient was found to have suffered deep cut on the right lung and left atrium one of the upper chamber of the heart that receives blood full of oxygen from the lungs and then empties the blood into the left ventricle.

In the theater, it took two hours our dedicated team of experts lead by general surgeon Dr. Hussein Iman to perform thoracic surgery on the patient carrying open thoracotomy and repairing the following;
-Myocardial laceration.
-Right lung and left atrium laceration.
-Fixing thoracotomy tube to monitor the drainage.

Mohamed was kept under post operation care at the ward where he was discharged after improving to a great extent and found stable. He spent 9 days in the ward.

Yesterday, joyful Mohamed has visited our facility to express his gratitude to surgery department team and by extention Garissa County Referral Hospital for the great care and successful surgery performed on him.

DISPOSAL OF UNCLAIMED BODIES IN THE MORGUE.

Garissa County Referral Hospital will dispose unclaimed dead bodies lying in the mortuary.

The hospital appeals to members of public to identify and collect the corpses within the given 7 days public notice in the newspaper below. The referral hospital will seek authority to dispose off the uncollected bodies pursuant to Public Health Act Cap 242 after the notice period elapses.

The decision to dispose bodies is to decongest the mortuary that has a holding capacity of 12 bodies and avoid them decomposing causing health hazards.

The unidentified bodies preserved in the mortuary have been picked from different places in the county by police.

The list of the bodies can be accessed at the public health department at Garissa County Referral Hospital.

Garissa County Referral Hospital provides high quality fistula repair surgery and post operative care at no cost to the patients.

The program that is run by the Referral Hospital alongside Fistula foundation kenya is a routine service.

Mothers are advised to seek early medical intervention as prolonged or obstructed labour without prompt medical care that causes tissue necrosis resulting a hole between birth canal and bladder and or re**um that leads to urine and stool inconvenience causing obstetric fistula.

GARISSA MARKS WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY;

Garissa County Referral Hospital has today played host to world health mental day commemoration. The 2022 theme for the mental health day is dubbed, "Make Mental Health and Wellbeing for All a Global Priority".

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

The overall objective of the day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.

In kenya studies stipulate that a staggering 1 out of 4 persons who seek healthcare services have a mental health condition depression being the common disorder and there are increasing rates of substance and alcohol use disorders.

To enhance and strengthen mental health and psychosocial services there are 5 psychiatry nurses, 1 psychiatric clinical officer, 1 counselling psychologist and 3 social workers all stationed at Garissa County Referral Hospital offering outpatient services.

Speaking while addressing the function, acting chief officer for Health and Sanitation Mohamed Salat has made the following recommendations;

1- Partnership and resource mobilisation for MHPSS rollout in GarissaCounty.
2. Advocate for better resource and allocation by the county government and agencies.
3. Ministry of health Garissa County MHPSS unit seeks to develop a costed investment case.
4. Mental Health case investment be included in the CIDP for implementation of MH programs.
5. Integrate mental health in all primary health care programs to create awareness, identify cases and active case management in the community level.
6. Improve and capacity build the community health personnel in community based mental health psychosocial services.

Debridement and reconstructive surgery on a patient inflicted with degloving injury on the face and right hand after hyena attack at Raaya, Garissa.

Degloving injury is a serious and painful injury that requires immediate and special medical care.

The reconstructive surgery procedure that took three hours was successfully performed by our team of experts that included Dr. Hussein Iman-General Surgeon, Dr. Fuad Farah-ENT Surgeon and Dr. Ahmed Abdi Dental surgeon.

GOVERNOR TOURS FACILITY LAUNCHES UNIT, GARISSA

Governor Nathif Jama Aden together with his deputy Abdi Dagane toured Garissa county referral hospital (GCRH) and subsequently launched Health products and technology unit (HPTU).

HPTU acts linkage between the facility and supplier KEMSA by identifying the required medical items and what's available with the supplier ensuring effective supply chain of health commodities.

The unit will also be able to monitor the movement of health items from the facility's storage hence account for every use.

While briefly addressing the public HE the governor made the assurance that shortage of drugs will be story of the past under his leadership.

After inspecting the drugs at the main storage, the governor and his deputy similarly took a walk to renal unit for briefing taking note on the needs to enhance more on service delivery.

COUNTY HEALTH AND SANITATION DEPARTMENT PROCURES DRUGS WORTH 16 MILLION, GARISSA.

Garissa county referral hospital(GCRH) has today received the first batch of essential drugs and medical equipment from Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA).

Speaking when receiving the consignment, GCRH CEO Ahmed Diis said restocking the facility is part of its strategy to enhance service delivery.

The first consignment of three truck loads of drugs which is part of the 20 million order was flagged off by Garissa County governor His Excellency Nathif Jama Aden at Garissa primary ground aftermath the swearing-in ceremony.

Garissa County governor HE Nathif Jama had earlier today held discussions with the principal secretary (PS) for health Susan Mochache CBS at the ministry of health on various issues regarding the general improvement of health services in Garissa.

Later on the governor held another meeting with the head of cancer control program Dr Mary Ngangasi to learn the current status of Garissa cancer center and plan for it's launch in the near future.

His excellency governor Nathif is committed to provide efficient and quality healthcare for all.

COUNTY LAUNCHES HEMOPHILIA AND SICKLE CELL DISEASE(SCD) CARE CLINIC;

Garissa county government through health and Sanitisation department in partnership with Kenya Haemophilia Association have launched Hemophilia and Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Care Clinic.

The Hemophilia Clinic at Garissa County Referral Hospital is regarded as a major milestone by the department of health in the county in an effort towards providing service for the patients with blood disorders.

Hemophilia is an inherited blood disorder mostly from mother to their children, characterized by long episodes of bleeding where patients lack a protein that triggers the clotting process. The condition can be fatal if not swiftly managed.

The establishment of the Clinic is a ray of hope as patients will get drugs at no cost lifting them the burden of footing the exorbitant drugs used to contain the disease.

FREE FISTULA REPAIR SURGERY LAUNCHED, GARISSA.

Garissa county government department of health and Fistula Foundation ink one year partnership for free Fistula repair surgery at Garissa County Referral Hospital.

Obstetric fistula is a treatable and preventable childbirth injury that is generally caused by prolonged or obstructed labour without prompt medical care that causes tissue necrosis resulting a hole between birth canal and bladder and or re**um that leads to urine and stool inconvenience.

During the launch CECM for Health and Sanitisation Roble Nuno called for members of the community to play arole in realising the goal toward a society free from fistula.

Roble further urged every man whose expectant wife is deemed to require prompt obstetric care like a cesarean section to immediately grant a consent to avoid prolonged labour that leads to fistula development.

Studies have stipulated fistula as one of the causes of maternal mortality.

The program will see the following realised;

-Promote new service availability of fistula repair through appropriate channels.
-Provide high quality fistula repair surgery and post operative care at no cost to the patient.
-Raise awareness on the importance of fistula treatment service.
-Free screening to intensify fistula activities.
