π¬ James (not his real name), a 40-year-old driver from Nairobi, had always been known as hardworking and dependable. Over time, however, alcohol slowly became part of his daily routine. What started as a way to relax after work turned into a dependency he could no longer control.
His work began to suffer. He started missing shifts, and eventually lost his job. At home, tension grew as his family struggled to understand his behavior. Despite multiple attempts to quit, the cravings were overwhelming.
James felt stuck and hopeless.
His turning point came when his wife reached out to Asumbi Treatment Centre. Though hesitant at first, James agreed to seek help.
The first days were difficult. Detox brought physical discomfort, and therapy forced him to confront painful realities. But slowly, with support and guidance, he began to change.
He learned to manage cravings, rebuild discipline, and develop healthier habits. More importantly, he regained confidence in himself.
Today, James is sober, working again, and rebuilding his relationship with his family. He continues to attend aftercare programs to stay focused.
His journey shows that recovery is possible β no matter how difficult the situation seems.
π When Someone Looks Fine β But Is Struggling Inside
π¬ Not all addiction is visible.
Some individuals maintain jobs, relationships, and daily routines β yet struggle silently with dependency.
This is often called functional addiction.
Signs may include:
β’ Drinking or using daily but still functioning
β’ Hiding substance use
β’ Increasing dependence over time
β’ Using substances to cope with stress
Because everything βlooks okay,β help is often delayed β making the situation worse.
At Asumbi Treatment Centre, we understand that addiction does not always look obvious.
π’ Donβt wait for things to fall apart β seek help early.
π Why do you think functional addiction is hard to detect?

The treatment goal of the addicted person has to learn to function as a sick person and has to be taught step by step, how to function initially as a recovering person and finally as well person.
Treatment Plan:- The program runs for a minimum of 3 months fully residential; Implemented in three different stages namely:
1. Orientation/ social Detoxification - 2 weeks.
2. Primary Treatment - 8 weeks.
3. Discharge plan - 2 weeks.
The 8-week treatment is divided into 2 segments (each segment running for 4 weeks). The first segment focuses on education about addiction and individual acceptance of it, the second deals with recovery and the establishment of a sober life for the individual.
