Hellen Kilusu is a certified and seasoned Counselling Psychologist with over 10 years of hands-on experience in various fields ranging from Counselling, Community Health, Case Management, Research, and Data collection. She holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Nairobi, a diploma in community health, a certificate in life skills, and is currently enrolled for a Ph.D. in African Women Studies. She has a deep understanding of Mental Health, mental health issues that the world is slowly waking up to, which has affected society in a big way, and also the policies and theories that inform Counseling Psychology and Mental Health.
Her training experience has over the years evolved from direct implementation to consultancy and teaching in Universities and back to implementation based on client needs and scope of work. Teaching has introduced her to a new path to explore counseling psychology from a learner-instructor perspective and the effect of intentional body-mind wellness, and body-mind use on empowering learners to understand themselves, gain knowledge and help others in their path to career growth.
She has hands-on training and implementation with Amref International University where she is currently Lecturing, RefuSHE Kenya where she spearheaded the development and initiation of a Mental Health Program to support unaccompanied refugee girls and young women, Compassion International Kenya Projects, Research with different organizations where she learned the importance of data in programming, data narrative in service delivery and impact in communities. Her Mentorship and Trauma-informed approach to programming, planning, implementation, and evaluation enable her to deliver with the utmost professionalism, respect, and integrity.
Staff wellness programs have introduced her to the psychosocial needs of employees and the areas to focus on that cut across working space and how to address mental health issues with awareness of differences in experiences, upbringing, and orientation of personalities.
