A Neurological disorder from acute rheumatic fever, causing involuntary movements and weakness in children (5–15 years).
Causes: 👇
Autoimmune response post-group A streptococcal infection; antibodies attack basal ganglia.
👉 Risk factors: untreated strep infections, genetic predisposition.
Symptoms:👇
👉 Involuntary jerky movements (chorea), muscle weakness, poor coordination, unsteady gait.
👉 Emotional lability, behavioral changes, speech difficulties.
👉 Worsens with stress/fatigue; improves with rest.
Physiotherapy Management:👇
✅ Goals: Improve motor control, strength, coordination, function; prevent complications.
✅ Assessment: Evaluate movement, strength, balance, daily activities.
✅ Interventions:
👉 Gentle stretching, coordination tasks (e.g., reaching).
👉 Balance/gait training with assistive devices if needed.
👉 Low-resistance isometric exercises.
👉 Weighted vests, deep breathing for sensory/relaxation.
👉 Task-specific training for daily activities.
