August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week. The theme for 2022 is ‘Step up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support.’

The many benefits of breast milk are undeniable.

Breastfeeding protects against infections and later health risks like diabetes.

Breastfeeding results in Better Oral and Facial Development. When your baby breastfeeds the oral muscles are exercised. Strong facial muscles help promote more ideal facial growth and development.

Ideal jaw development will prevent crooked teeth and your baby will have a healthier smile.

Dental Health is an important part of your oral health. It is important to take care of your teeth and gums while you are pregnant. Pregnancy causes hormonal changes which may increase your risk for gum disease. Morning sickness may increase dental cavities due to the acidity. Baby teeth start developing in the third to sixth month of pregnancy. It is important pregnant mothers monitor their diet to support healthy teeth in their babies. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, do not skip your routine dental visits.

It is important to floss twice a day. Even baby teeth should be flossed. As soon as two teeth erupt you should keep them clean by brushing and flossing. You may find it easier to floss your baby’s teeth if you lay them down on their back and you sit behind them. You will see much better from this position. The floss should slide against the side of each tooth.

If baby teeth will fall out, why is it important to care for them?

Baby Teeth are essential in helping your baby chew, smile and speak.

Baby teeth maintain the space in your child’s jaw for the adult tooth growing below the gums.

By promoting healthy chewing, the face and jaw muscles are built and strengthened.

It is important to care for baby teeth because they play an important role in your child’s growth and development.

With good habits formed during your child’s early years they will learn to take care of their permanent teeth.

We try to keep the baby tooth in place as long as possible. This is because it saves the space for the adult teeth that will eventually grow in.

But sometimes the baby tooth must be removed because of a dental infection or the tooth cannot be restored.

In these instances it is important to save the space with a space maintainer. This will stay in place until the adult starts grow in.
