Skills Parents Need to Learn that
Small steps make progress for the children with intellectual disabilities
1. Patience and Understanding
Children may learn or adapt more slowly, so patience is key.
2. Consistency and Structure
A predictable routine helps children feel safe and reduces anxiety.
3. Advocacy Skills
Learning to speak up for your child’s rights in school, healthcare, and community settings.
4. Communication Skills
Using clear, simple language, gestures, or alternative communication methods when needed.
5. Self-Care and Stress Management
Parents must also care for themselves spiritually, emotionally, and physically to avoid burnout.
6. Collaboration
Working with teachers, therapists, doctors, and support networks for the best outcome for the child.
