Torticollis also known as “wryneck” is a problem involving the muscles of the neck that causes the head to tilt down.

Wryneck can be inherited. It can also develop in the womb. This may happen if your baby’s head is in the wrong position.

It can also occur due to damage to the muscles or blood supply to the neck.

It is characterized by

➡️ Inability to move head normally
➡️ Neck pain or stiffness
➡️ Headache
➡️ Having one shoulder higher than the other
➡️ Swollen neck muscles
➡️ A tilting of your chin to one side
➡️ The faces of children with congenital torticollis may appear flattened and unbalanced.

Physiotherapy helps to
1️⃣Strengthen neck muscles
2️⃣Correct muscle imbalance
3️⃣Gain pain-free movement (range of motion)
4️⃣Improve postural control and symmetry
5️⃣Improve the body’s alignment by easing muscle tension
The above is achieved by

1) Applying heat
2) Gentle stretching of the neck and back muscles
3) Strengthening of the neck and back muscles
4) Massaging the affected area
5) Guidance for correct positioning of infants
6) Taping to elongate the muscles to facilitate stretching
7) Neck braces

📢📢📢Physical therapists are THE primary care provider for orthopedic pain and injury!

When most people injure themselves, their first stop is their primary care physician. But your primary care physician may not be the best choice for your orthopedic pain or injury (think shoulder or back pain, ankle sprain, etc)!

Patients with new back pain who saw a physical therapist first were less likely to fill an opioid prescription within 30 days of diagnosis and less likely to become long term opioid users.

A major barrier noted: ease of access to a physical therapist! Patients with direct access without provisions (so true direct access 👍) were 3x more likely to see a PT first!
