Four Stages of Addiction. While it is possible for an individual to develop an addiction accidentally, for instance when taking a habit-forming prescription, most addictions follow a well-established path from experimentation to regular use and abuse to dependency and tolerance to the final stage: addiction.

April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month to bring attention to the negative impact of stress. Managing stress is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Knowing how to manage stress can improve mental and physical well-being as well as minimize exacerbation of health-related issues.

It’s critical to recognize what stress and anxiety look like, take steps to build resilience, and know where to go for help. The Mental Health INSTITUTION (THE DOVE HOME) provides some tips on how to reduce your stress by utilizing a Stress Screener. Also, take some time to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and familiarize yourself with strategies for stress management.

THE DOVE also offers several resources that can assist managers and employees in dealing with stress and anxiety, including the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and the Office of the Ombudsman. While EAP focuses on confidential counseling and enhancing and maintaining the well-being of all employees, the Office of the Ombudsman provides confidential, informal services related to coaching, facilitation, and mediation. Contact information for both services can be found in the above links

What Increases the Risk for Alcohol Use Disorder?

A person’s risk for developing AUD depends in part on how much, how often, and how quickly they consume alcohol. Alcohol misuse—defined as drinking in a manner, situation, amount, or frequency that could cause harm to the person who drinks or to those around them—over time increases the risk of AUD. Alcohol misuse includes binge drinking and heavy alcohol use. Other factors also increase the risk of AUD, such as:

Drinking at an early age. A recent national survey found that among people ages 26 and older, those who began drinking before age 15 were more than three times as likely to report having AUD in the past year as those who waited until age 21 or later to begin drinking.3 The risk for females in this group is higher than that of males.

Genetics and family history of alcohol problems. Genetics play a role, with hereditability accounting for approximately 60%; however, like other chronic health conditions, AUD risk is influenced by the interplay between a person’s genes and their environment. Parents’ drinking patterns may also influence the likelihood that a child will one day develop AUD.

Mental health conditions and a history of trauma. A wide range of psychiatric conditions—including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—are comorbid with AUD and are associated with an increased risk of AUD. People with a history of childhood trauma are also vulnerable to AUD.

Recent research has highlighted the importance of sleep for overall health, particularly in relation to mental well-being. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased level of stress hormones , which my contribute to anxiety and depression.in contrast, getting adequate sleep ( 7-9 hours per night for most adult) can enhance emotional resilience, improve cognitive function, and low the risk of mood disorders. Moreover prioritizing sleeping hygiene, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and creating a restful environment, can lead to significant improvement in mental health quality of life.

What are the five stages of grief?
Denial
Feeling numb is common in the early days after a bereavement. Some people at first carry on as if nothing has happened. Even if we know with our heads that someone has died it can be hard to believe that someone important is not coming back. It’s also very common to feel the presence of someone who has died, hear their voice or even see them.

Anger
Anger is a completely natural emotion, and very natural after someone dies. Death can seem cruel and unfair, especially when you feel someone has died before their time or you had plans for the future together. It’s also common to feel angry towards the person who has died, or angry at ourselves for things we did or didn’t do before their death.

Bargaining
When we are in pain, it’s sometimes hard to accept that there’s nothing we can do to change things. Bargaining is when we start to make deals with ourselves, or perhaps with God if we’re religious. We want to believe that if we act in particular ways we will feel better. It’s also common to find ourselves going over and over things that happened in the past and asking a lot of ‘what if’ questions, wishing we could go back and change things in the hope things could have turned out differently.

Depression
Sadness and longing are what we think of most often when we think about grief. This pain can be very intense and come in waves over many months or years. Life can feel like it no longer holds any meaning which can be very scary.

Acceptance
Grief comes in waves and it can feel like nothing will ever be right again. But gradually most people find that the pain eases, and it is possible to accept what has happened. We may never ‘get over’ the death of someone precious, but we can learn to live again, while keeping the memories of those we have lost close to us.

THIS IS A PHASE

Tough times are just a phase.
They don't last forever.
Life is a cycle of highs and lows.
Remember, this too shall pass.
You're in the middle of the storm now, but clear skies are ahead. Hold on.

* #* *Alcohol use disorder AUD frequently occurs with other mental health disorders and vice versa.*

Primary care providers and other clinicians are well positioned to identify these conditions, make informed clinical decisions, and refer patients to specialists, thereby improving treatment outcomes.

* # A timeline of symptoms and behaviors is a key tool for differential diagnosis* .

In order to guide treatment, it is helpful to learn, if possible, whether psychiatric symptoms are present or absent during periods of abstinence to differentiate whether they are alcohol-induced or separate, primary conditions.

# *The severity of both the* *AUD* and the. *co-occurring mental health disorder determines the appropriate level of care* .

Patients with less severe AUD and mental health conditions may be able to receive treatment in primary care, whereas those with more severe conditions may need care from a mental health or addiction specialist or both.

*The likelihood of recovery from both conditions is higher if *both the AUD and the* `` *`co-occurring mental health disorder are treated.*

Medications for AUD and for mild to moderate depressive and anxiety disorders~ can be started in a primary care setting.
