Transmara West Sub-county Hospital is located in Kilgoris Township of Trans Mara West Sub County, in the newly established Narok County, formerly of South Rift Valley Province. It is the only Ministry of Medical Services’ public hospital serving the nomadic Maasai, Kalenjin and other communities residing in the two sub counties (Transmara East and West sub counties). The catchment population is approximately 274,532 individuals living in Trans Mara (source: District Development Office, Trans Mara) and the neighboring Gucha and Kuria districts formerly of Nyanza Province. It is divided into Trans Mara West and East Sub counties. It is located 80 km to the west of Masaai Mara National Game Reserve. The hospital has catchment area of 28,700 people. Average number of clients/patients seen annually in the out patients department is 48,618 as per last financial year (2013/2014). Topography & Climate
The district has two major topographic categories; highlands, which lie between 2200m and 2500m above sea level and the plateau, which rises from 1500-2200m above sea level. The district enjoys medium temperatures ranging from 14.80c to 20.30c with highest temperature in February and the lowest in June/July. Rainfall has a bimodal pattern with long rains between March and June reaching their peak in April while the short rains are experienced between August and November. The climatic conditions are responsible for the malaria epidemic/upsurge, which follow the rainfall pattern making the district epidemic prone. Total population (2014)
