Today, the County Division of Primary Healthcare held a review meeting to evaluate the performance of our Primary Healthcare Networks (PCNs) and their Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs).

As we aim towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), our "Afya Mashinani" model remains the focus of the department’s strategy, utilizing a Hub and Spoke model to move essential services directly to the last needy client through outreaches and mobile clinics.

During today's session, we consolidated the achievements of our MDTs from the July–December 2025 period and solidified a uniform service delivery model to ensure consistency across all seven PCNs.

We also finalized a strategic roadmap for the upcoming January-June 2026 cycle, focusing on enhanced referrals and special case follow-ups, while ending with a formal advocacy for the resources required to keep our PHC services efficient and sustainable. By refining how our multidisciplinary teams operate, we are building a resilient health system that starts at the grassroots’ level.

The Department of Health, in collaboration with Helen Keller International, continues to implement a gender focused research study in Kilifi County aimed at strengthening understanding of how gender-related factors influence access to health and nutrition services. The study is funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and is being implemented in Cambodia, Kenya, and Senegal.

Following the dissemination and validation of preliminary findings in September 2025, the study advanced to Phase II, which involved further analysis and refinement of results. A follow-up validation meeting was therefore convened to present the Phase II findings, validate emerging insights, and gather stakeholder input to inform the final interpretation and application of the study results. The meeting also provided an opportunity to review and prioritize areas for co-creation in Phase III, and to discuss recommendations and next steps.

The Department seeks to promote continued multi-sectoral engagement and technical input to ensure that the study findings are well grounded, contextually relevant, and useful in informing improvements in health and nutrition outcomes in Kilifi County.

The Department of Health, in collaboration with the Africa Sickle Cell Organization (ASCO), continues to implement a comprehensive programme aimed at preventing and reducing the burden of sickle cell disease across the county.

To strengthen programme indicators and improve overall performance, the Sickle Cell Technical Working Group (TWG) recently convened to review progress of the ongoing interventions, deliberate on the proposed preceptorship course framework, and gather stakeholder feedback to guide the way forward.

This is critical for the people of Kilifi, where sickle cell disease remains a public health concern. By strengthening health worker capacity, improving early detection, and enhancing quality of care, the programme contributes to reduced complications, improved quality of life for affected individuals, and better health outcomes for families and communities across the county.

The Afya Mashinani Program successfully closed out the year 2025 at Gotani Dispensary in Kaloleni Sub-county, where a multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr. Angore, and championed by Dr. Saumu, Kaloleni MOH, Dr. Kashero, Dr. Yaa, and Dr. Ooga, various medical and clinical officers and nurses, provided specialized medical services and consultations to the local community.

This initiative, introduced by H.E. Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, aims to bring quality healthcare closer to communities where access to specialized services is often limited by distance and proximity to health facilities.

Throughout the day, over 700 residents were attended to, receiving a wide range of services including cancer screening, pediatric care, eye clinic services, obstetrics and gynecology care, hydrocele and hernia clinics, laboratory services, mental health support, medication therapy management, and HIV testing and counseling, among others.

Community Health Promoters also assisted in mobilizing residents for the program. The support and facilitation provided by the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Paul Katana, was highly appreciated. Kayafungo MCA, Hon. Agnes Sidi, was also present and commended the Department of Health for its commitment to ensuring residents receive quality and accessible healthcare services.

The Department of Health extends its warm wishes to everyone for a happy festive season and a prosperous New Year. We remain committed to serving the people and advancing quality healthcare delivery in the coming year.
