Kilifi County joined the global community in marking World Toilet Day at Msabaha Grounds in Ganda Ward, Malindi Sub-county.
Observed annually on November 19, World Toilet Day highlights the global sanitation crisis affecting more than 3.4 billion people and reinforces the need to achieve SDG 6, clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. The 2025 theme, “We’ll Always Need the Toilet,” emphasizes the enduring importance of strong sanitation systems amid challenges such as climate change, ageing infrastructure, and underinvestment.
In Kilifi County, limited access to safe toilets and the prevalence of open defecation continue to drive sanitation-related diseases such as cholera and typhoid. With the County’s coastal location increasing vulnerability to flooding, more investment is needed to strengthen resilient sanitation infrastructure. Ongoing county and community-led efforts remain vital in improving hygiene and public health.
The event also emphasized the significance of having access to clean and secure toilets, It was pointed out that proper sanitation facilities contribute to dignity, safety, and gender equality, while also fostering social and economic advancement, including safe sanitation for all, establishing a strong foundation for health, dignity, and peace in Kilifi County.
