Otitis media with effusion (OME), "glue ear," is the buildup of non-infectious fluid (serous or mucoid) in the middle ear space behind the eardrum, usually due to a blocked Eustachian tube.

The main symptom is muffled hearing, though a feeling of ear fullness or pressure can also occur.

Common causes include respiratory infections, allergies, and irritants like cigarette smoke, and while many cases resolve on their own, some may lead to conductive hearing loss, especially in children, potentially affecting speech development.
