Ever read The Mountain Is You and felt like it was reading you back?
One of the hardest truths it reveals is this: sometimes, we are the obstacle. Not life, not people, not circumstances but us.
Self-sabotage doesn’t always look dramatic.
It shows up as procrastination when you’re overwhelmed.
As staying in familiar pain because change feels unsafe.
As doubting yourself just when you’re about to grow.
From a mental health perspective, self-sabotage is often a coping mechanism. It’s the mind trying to protect you from discomfort, rejection, or failure; even when that “protection” keeps you stuck. Unresolved emotions, anxiety, past experiences, and low self-worth can quietly shape these patterns.
And that’s where compassion comes in.
Healing isn’t about shaming yourself into change. It’s about awareness. It’s about asking, “What am I protecting myself from?” instead of “What’s wrong with me?”
Growth starts when you:
-Recognise your patterns without judgement
-Regulate your emotions instead of avoiding them
-Choose small, consistent actions over perfection
-Give yourself the same grace you give others
You are not broken; you are responding to what you’ve been through. And with the right support, tools, and intention, you can unlearn what no longer serves you.
The mountain is not in your way…
The mountain is you.
And that means, you also carry the strength to rise above it.
