WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOUR TEETH IS ALREADY DECAYING?
We’ve heard a lot of how to prevent tooth decay, however some people are past that stage.
Most people’s teeth are in different stages of decay.
What do you do if your teeth is already decaying?
Everything you need to know👇🏼
WHAT IS TOOTH DECAY? 🪥
Tooth decay, also called dental caries is the breakdown of the tooth’s enamel by acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
- Poor oral hygiene 🪥
- High consumption of sugary or acidic foods and beverages 🍹
- Presence of bacteria in the mouth that break down food to form acid 🦠
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? 🪧
- Tooth sensitivity, especially to hot or cold foods
- Visible holes or pits in the teeth
- Toothache or pain when chewing
- Discoloration or teeth stain
- Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOUR TEETH IS ALREADY DECAYING?
1) If the decay is still in the early stage (White spots and mild sensitivity)
At this stage, the enamel is weak but not fully broken down. You can go in with:
- Brushing 2x a day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Reducing sugar intake, eating foods rich in calcium, and drinking a lot of water
- Maintain good oral hygiene by flossing and using mouthwash.
2) If there’s a small cavity (Mild to moderate decay)
Once decay breaks through the enamel and forms a cavity, it won’t heal naturally.
Your dentist may recommend:
- Dental fillings
- Silver diamine fluoride, which is a liquid that stops decay in its tracks
3) If the cavity is deep (Severe decay, pain or infection)
Treatment options include:
- Dental crowns
- Root canal
- Tooth extraction, if the tooth is beyond saving.
If you have a tooth abscess (severe infection, swelling or pus)
This is a dental emergency. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent the infection from spreading.
It’s best to see a dentist immediately.
HOW CAN YOU PREVENT DECAY? 🔐
You can prevent it by improving oral health and making better food choices.
- Brush 2x a day with a fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride strengthens the enamel and makes the teeth more resistant to decay.
- Floss daily: Flossing removes plaques and food particles between the teeth.- Limit sugary and acidic foods
Bacteria in the mouth thrives on sugar to produce acid which erodes the enamel.
- Get regular dental checkups
Visit your dentist every 6 months for professional cleanings and exams
- Eat a balanced diet
Diet rich in fruits and vegetables helps strengthen the teeth.- Stay hydrated
Water helps in washing away food particles from the mouth and keeps it hydrated.
- Avoid smoking and reduce alcohol intake
Smoking and alcohol increases your risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
