Keratoconus is an eye condition where the normally round, dome-shaped cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone shape. This irregular shape prevents light from being focused correctly onto the retina, leading to distorted and blurry vision.
Key Features:
Progressive condition – usually starts in the teens or early 20s and can worsen over time.
Symptoms may include:
Blurry or distorted vision
Increased sensitivity to light and glare
Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions
Difficulty seeing at night
Causes:
The exact cause isn't fully understood, but it may involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. It can run in families and is more common in people with certain conditions like asthma, Down syndrome, and connective tissue disorders.
Treatment:
Early stages: Glasses or soft contact lenses
Moderate to advanced: Rigid gas permeable or scleral contact lenses
Advanced cases: Corneal cross-linking (to stop progression), or corneal transplant if vision becomes severely impaired
