On the 3rd of May 2025, all Roads lead to the scenic Elephant Hills.
The adventure begins with a 3 km moderately paved path through a planted forest, where you might spot sheep and cattle grazing peacefully. This scenic walk leads to the official starting point at 9,192 ft (2,802 m). From here, a 1.5 km trek takes you to the Bamboo Gate at 9,622 ft (2,933 m), where the trail narrows and turns muddy. The bamboo zone can be wet and slippery, so comfortable, waterproof hiking boots are a must!
At 10,679 ft (3,255 m), youβll emerge onto the moorland, a section dramatically named A Point of Despairβbut donβt let the name fool you, we wonβt be despairing here! The trail then transitions into the rocky zone, dotted with shrubs and giant lobelias, adding a touch of beauty to the rugged terrain.
As you reach The Tail at 11,526 ft (3,513 m), the summit comes into view, beckoning you to conquer the final steep stretch. The effort is well worth it: youβll be rewarded with breathtaking 360Β° views of Kinangop Peak, Sasumua Dam, and the distant Ndakaini Dam. This is the perfect spot to enjoy your well-earned snacks while soaking in the magnificent scenery.
The descent follows the same path and is just as challenging, testing your kneesβ patience as gravity pulls you down. But no worriesβyou wonβt remember the strain when you look back at the incredible memories youβve made!
