You will agree with me that a good number of you men would rather chew on a barbed wire rather than attend therapy 🤦🏾‍♀️. Well, because of that a whole month was dedicated to help correct the view of mental health issues amongst your gender, break stigma and encourage leaning on available resources ...... you know you guys go through and are carrying a lot - a lot!

June is globally recognized as Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by men and encouraging them to seek help when needed.

I'm happy to note though, more men are gravitating towards spaces that provide an opportunity to safely handle these conversations. A good friend whom I respect in the profession has organized one such space.

I think it makes for a great father's day gift too for those who are wondering what to get the daddy in their lives.

This new week, confidently step into your light. ✨

There’s a big difference between grandiosity and self-awareness.

Grandiosity says, “I’m better than everyone else”— it shuts others out and assumes there’s nothing left to learn. But self-awareness says, “I’m good at this,” with honesty and humility.

It’s okay to say, “I’m good at math.” That’s confidence. Saying, “I’m better than everyone else at math?” That leans toward narcissism.

Thanks to my pal .gathagu - I recently discovered the and I'm still in disbelief that as a nature lover, I've had access to this paradise all along being only a 30 minute drive from where I reside. Between the water features, and the fauna and flora - I am simply hooked!

Last week we agreed that we'd first put in an hour of work and then enjoy a walk on the trail thereafter. A great plan, until "Tommy", a well fed and well groomed cat appeared. He kept snuggling up on our feet and when he got our attention would roll over - usually a sign of affection and trust, and often an invitation for belly rubs.

I confess - I was too weak to resist his charm, my priorities became warped and I gave in. He loved the play but engaging him also left me feeling amazing.

Pets make a great addition to one's emotional wellness regimen in the following ways:

1️⃣ Stress Reduction:
Interacting with pets, such as petting a dog or cat, can lower cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress, and lower blood pressure.

2️⃣ Boost in Mood and Self-Esteem:
Tommy certainly evoked positive emotions. Pets help release endorphins and also get individuals feeling loved and accepted.

3️⃣ Boost Creativity:
The creative writing I'd intended to do that day had to wait - well cats are the real bosses and prefer to always get their way - but I left that experience flooded with ideas on how to progress.

Happy new month and happy Labor Day.

May this be a day we remind ourselves that scheduling selfcare is as important as planning for the other activities we deem 'productive'.

Rest is crucial in preventing burnout.

I love books 📚 and also tea, but since yesterday was International Book Day, the ☕ will have to wait :)

Books have 'taken' me to many places, from a market place in Lagos to a fashion house in Paris, to a boardroom on Wall Street - giving me a glimpse of how people outside my little world, experience life.

Books have provided a sweet escape in times I needed a distraction from 'life' or to kill boredom - a good book is especially a wonderful travel companion.

As a psychologist I have also benefitted and recommended books to many people, clients and otherwise, as a form of bibliotherapy.

And of course to crown it all, there's the knowledge, skills and hacks that have shaped my life and continue to expand my mind to date.

It's difficult to fathom a world where curious, malleable, young minds get to miss out on all these - yet I'm acutely aware that there are many children around the world without access to books. In my own small way of tackling this, I have partnered with Mr. Zack Gichane who started and runs Gacharage-ini Community Library on the beautiful slopes of Murang'a County, to help equip this and other nearby libraries through book drives.

As my LinkedIn community, my call to action to you is, in case you may have books (academic or leisure read) that are in good condition and can benefit a school going child or a young adult, I'd be happy to receive them, or you may get in touch directly with Mr. Gichane, tagged on this post.

I hope you got to experience a few chapters of a great book yesterday.

Seasons of major life transitions, whether positive or negative, can often be challenging to navigate. Yet, change is inevitable and sooner or later we all find ourselves in such a season.

That same season, however, is often an opportunity for growth and adjustments in how we live life, relate with others and how we show up for ourselves.

Let me know some habits you have found helpful while navigating life changes. Here are my top 3.

It is a great day for my country! Today, Kenya's High Court has decriminalized attempted su***de, marking a significant milestone in our nation's mental health journey. This progressive decision shifts the perspective on su***de from a criminal act to a mental health issue, fostering a more compassionate and supportive environment for those in distress.

Implications of Decriminalizing Su***de:
i) Encouraging Help-Seeking Behavior: Individuals will now feel safer to seek professional support without the fear of legal repercussions, leading to timely interventions and support.
ii) Reducing Stigma: This change helps dismantle the negative perceptions associated with mental health struggles, promoting open conversations and understanding. This will also allow families offer decent send-offs for their dearly departed loved ones, like they do for any other cause of death.... Hopefully the religious institutions that have previously been averse to conducting burial ceremonies for those who die by su***de can also get with it.
iii) Improving Data Collection: With decriminalization, more accurate reporting of su***de attempts can occur, enabling better-informed mental health strategies and policies.
iv) Facilitating Effective Interventions: Resources can now be directed towards treatment and prevention rather than punitive measures, enhancing overall mental health care.

In the midst of recent challenges in Kenya, including reports of youth abductions, femicide, and economic hardships, this development offers a positive start to the year 2025. We hope for continued commitment to prioritizing mental health and the well-being of our citizens.

As a mental health practitioner, I celebrate this landmark ruling and remain dedicated to advocating for accessible mental health care for all. Let's continue to support one another and work towards a society where mental health is prioritized and understood.
