‎In a remarkable display of compassion and community spirit, Manchester United fans in Meru took part in a highly successful blood donation drive aimed at boosting blood reserves at the Meru Blood Transfusion Satellite Centre located within Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH).

‎From the early hours of the day, donors who were mostly dressed in the club’s iconic crimson colours streamed into the venue united by a common purpose of giving the gift of life. Pint after pint of blood was collected in an atmosphere filled with hope, excitement, and solidarity. Football passion was transformed into a humanitarian mission that will directly benefit hundreds of patients in need of emergency transfusions, mothers experiencing childbirth complications, accident victims, cancer patients, and children battling severe anaemia.

‎Beyond donations, the event also served as an important awareness platform for inspiring more community members especially young people to embrace voluntary blood donation as both a civic responsibility and a meaningful act of kindness. What began as a gathering of football enthusiasts ultimately became a powerful demonstration of how communities can support healthcare systems and help save lives.

‎Nurses from across the county gathered at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) to officially launch the commemoration of International Nurses Week in a vibrant ceremony that celebrated the critical role of nurses in healthcare delivery. ‎Themed “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” today's event underscored the importance of investing in the growth and wellbeing of nurses. Participants were encouraged to actively pursue continuous professional development while also prioritizing their personal wellness to enhance both service delivery and quality of life.

‎A key highlight of the launch was an engaging and impactful session on mental health among healthcare workers which emphasized the need to address stress, burnout, and emotional wellbeing within the profession. It resonated strongly with attendees sparking meaningful conversations about self care and institutional support.

‎Phase two of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital's (MeTRH's) Twin Tower project has officially been handed over to the contractor as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialized healthcare services in Meru. The contractor is expected to break ground on phase two within the next two weeks even as the ongoing construction of phase one continues. The project is being overseen by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with completion projected to take eight months.

‎This expansion comes at a critical time as MeTRH transitions to a level six hospital. Upon completion, the Twin Tower and New Ward Block are expected to increase MeTRH’s bed capacity by over 800 beds. A wide range of specialized units including a maternity wing, pediatric unit, burns unit, High Dependency Unit (HDU), orthopedic unit, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), additional theatres, and expanded male and female wards will be housed within. This will play a key role in decongesting MeTRH and improving service delivery.

‎These infrastructural developments are a result of a strong and cordial working relationship between the County Government of Meru led by H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, and the national government. Residents of Meru and neighbouring counties will have better access to specialized healthcare services closer to home, significantly reducing the financial burden associated with seeking treatment far. The county government has also committed to increasing its healthcare workforce to ensure that this expanded infrastructure is matched with delivery of quality care.

‎The handing over ceremony was presided over by Meru Deputy Governor H.E. Lindah Kiome, and attended by key officials including Health Services CECM Dr. Dennis Mugambi, Health Services Ag. Chief Officer Dr. Koome Muthuri, MeTRH CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi, and representatives from Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Meru Blood Transfusion Satellite Centre is a lifeline that continues to save thousands of lives across Meru and neighboring counties. It plays a pivotal role in ensuring a steady, safe, and reliable supply of blood and blood products. From emergency cases and maternal care to chronic illnesses, availability of blood often marks the difference between life and death.

‎Dedicated teams regularly conduct outreaches in churches, learning institutions, and open air community settings not only to collect blood, but also to educate community members on the importance of voluntary blood donation. Through donor education and counseling, they help dispel myths, build trust, and encourage a culture of regular donation.

‎Before any donation is made, strict procedures are followed to safeguard both donor and recipient. Donors undergo screening of key health indicators followed by professional counseling to ensure fitness to donate. This careful process guarantees the safety and quality of every unit.

‎Once collected, the blood undergoes component processing where it is separated into different products such as packed red blood cells, platelets, and fresh frozen plasma (FFP). This approach ensures that a single donation can benefit multiple patients with different medical needs.

‎The centre also handles the sorting, storage, and distribution of blood and its components to various public, private, and faith-based hospitals. This coordinated network ensures timely access to lifesaving transfusions wherever they are needed. Another key service is crossmatching, a critical laboratory test that confirms compatibility between donor blood and recipients thereby minimizing the risk of transfusion reactions and ensuring patient safety.

‎Contrary to popular opinion, blood is provided free of charge except for a small fee to cover essential services such as crossmatching and necessary consumables including giving sets and cannulation supplies. This helps sustain operations while keeping services accessible to all.
