‎Today, World Tuberculosis Day was marked at Laare Health Centre in Igembe North, Meru county, bringing together health officials, community members, and key stakeholders in the fight against tuberculosis. The event was led by Health Services Ag. Chief Officer Dr. Koome Muthuri who was accompanied by Ag. County Director of Health Dr. Titus Mutura. It was held under the theme, “Yes! We Can End TB,” emphasizing collective responsibility in eliminating TB.

‎In his remarks, Dr. Koome emphasized that World TB Day serves to raise awareness about TB as a major public health concern, while reinforcing the message that treatment and recovery are achievable. County TB Coordinator Eunice Kanana highlighted the availability of modern diagnostic equipment including AI-powered X-ray technology. She noted that no one should die from TB since services such as testing, treatment, and TB education are offered for free. Dr. Mutura, urged residents to seek medical care promptly, support those undergoing treatment, and actively combat stigma and misinformation surrounding TB.

‎Meru remains among the top ten counties with a high TB burden, having recorded approximately 3,850 patients in 2025. However, health authorities report a gradual decline in cases, attributed to ongoing interventions and strengthened healthcare strategies.

‎Later, Dr. Koome oversaw the launch of key interventions including the County TB Strategic Operational Framework and an Integrated Specimen Referral System. The system will facilitate the collection of specimens from remote villages using motorbikes and their delivery to laboratories, significantly improving early detection and management of tuberculosis.

‎Vulnerable teenage girls at Theera School in Igembe North are experiencing renewed hope and improved school participation following the distribution of dignity packs under a menstrual health initiative spearheaded by the County Government of Meru in partnership with Mount Kenya Trust. This program seeks to combat period poverty, curb teenage pregnancies, improve school enrollment and retention, and ensure that girls do not miss classes due to lack of sanitary products. It also addresses critical health and social risks by discouraging the use of unsafe materials that can expose girls to infections, while reducing their vulnerability to sexual exploitation that is often driven by the need to access sanitary products.

‎Beneficiaries participated in an interactive informative educational session facilitated by health professionals. It covered key areas such as sexual and reproductive health, puberty, menstrual hygiene, and overall reproductive health awareness. Health workers also provided practical guidance on the proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of reusable sanitary pads, while creating a safe space for the girls to ask questions and seek clarification.

‎Educators at the school have already reported notable positive outcomes citing improved attendance among girls and a significant decline in teenage pregnancies. They expressed appreciation for the program's transformative impact on both the academic and personal lives of learners.

‎Each dignity pack is carefully designed to support safe and sustainable menstrual hygiene. They include eight reusable sanitary pads, two pairs of panties, a bar of soap, two waterproof storage bags, an Understanding the Adolescent booklet, and a user guide. With proper care, the pads can last between two to three years ensuring long term support. To maintain hygiene standards, periodic soap refills are provided.

‎Among those in attendance were Mount Kenya Trust Health Project Manager Ketty Gitonga, Reproductive Health Coordinator Susan Kimathi, Vertical Transmission Prevention and PMTCT Coordinator Florence Mwirigi, and GBV Coordinator Judy Kawira.

Health Services CECM Dr. Dennis Mugambi presided over the handover of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital's (MeTRH's) ward block for completion following the County Government of Meru's allocation of Ksh46 million to finalize works in the previously stalled five-storey building within the next four months. Once complete, it will add MeTRH's bed capacity by 250 beds, easing congestion and improving service delivery. Construction works are expected to start immediately.

‎MeTRH which has long operated with 360 beds, is set to exceed 800 beds through ongoing infrastructure upgrades under H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia’s administration, further supporting its transition to level six status and expanding access to specialized care in Meru and the Upper Eastern region. Additionally, four high volume sub-county hospitals are being upgraded to level five status to decentralize specialized healthcare services and reduce congestion at MeTRH.

‎The county government is also implementing over 74 health infrastructure projects across the county including a newly completed 20-bed capacity oncology ward at MeTRH which is awaiting commissioning. It is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing the rising burden of cancer by enabling administration of inpatient chemotherapy. Recruitment is also underway to address staffing gaps in health facilities and enhance care.

‎Afterwards, they conducted an inspection of the ongoing installation of a modern incinerator at MeTRH. Also present were MeTRH CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi, Health Administration Director Moses Baiyenia, MeTRH Director of Clinical Services Dr. Kinyua Ndegwa, and MeTRH Director of Administration and Planning Elemano Mugambi, among others.
