‎Earlier today, the Health Disposal Ad-hoc Committee met under the chairmanship of the Director of Health Administration Baiyenia Moses.

‎The committee agreed to fast track the disposal of healthcare waste including expired medicines and obsolete medical equipment to ensure safe and compliant waste management.

‎Members also toured the ongoing incinerator project, being implemented by the County Government of Meru in partnership with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF. Once completed, the Ksh19 million incinerator with a 100-kilogram capacity, will greatly improve healthcare waste management across public health facilities in Meru county.

‎Health Services Ag. Chief Officer Dr. Koome Muthuri received a courtesy call from representatives of the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo (CDI) to discuss progress in the management of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The CDI team is working as consultants under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) focusing on GBV risk management.

‎During the meeting, the team shared findings from their assessments conducted in Mutuati Sub-County, Igembe North, which revealed a high prevalence of GBV cases.

‎The CDI team requested support for the establishment of a Gender-Based Violence rescue center at Mutuati Sub-County Hospital. They also noted that KENHA officials are scheduled to visit the facility early next week for further assessments and support.

‎Dr. Koome assured the team of his full support and reaffirmed his commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at addressing GBV challenges in the area.

‎Mikumbune Sub-County Hospital is set to receive a major boost through the proposed construction of a Ksh20 million inpatient complex that will include modern surgical wards. This follows a productive stakeholders’ consultative engagement forum spearheaded by the County Government of Meru, the Ministry of Health, and the State Department for Public Works.

‎During a tour of the facility, officials noted that the hospital has a fully stocked pharmacy with current medicines valued at Ksh4.2 million. Ministry officials expressed their appreciation for the County Government of Meru's exemplary management of health commodities, particularly at the facility level.

‎County officials reiterated H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia’s commitment to continued collaboration with fellow leaders, national government institutions, and development partners to strengthen health infrastructure and service delivery, ultimately improving health outcomes for the people of Meru.

‎Community members were encouraged to fully utilize services offered at the sub-county hospital, with officials affirming that the facility is well equipped and adequately staffed to meet healthcare needs aligning with the Governor’s health agenda which prioritizes accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for all residents.

Kinoro Sub-County Hospital is set to benefit from the construction of a Ksh20 million modern maternity wing courtesy of H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia's strategic partnership with other leaders and the national government.

‎A multi-sectoral technical team from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the State Department for Public Works led by Mawira Mungania (MoH) and Arch. David Kangethe, conducted a consultative engagement with key stakeholders at the facility today. This visit formed part of an assessment tour aimed at identifying priority needs, inspecting the proposed site, and undertaking a comprehensive site assessment to inform the project’s implementation.

‎The new maternity wing is expected to significantly improve maternal, newborn, and child health services in Igoji Subcounty by enhancing service capacity, improving patient comfort, and strengthening the hospital’s ability to deliver quality and timely care.

‎Also in attendance were Medical Services Director Dr. Ka**ke Kaumbuki, Director of Health Administration Moses Baiyenia, Igoji West MCA Hon. Mutembei Mbiuki, and Igoji East MCA and Chairperson of the Sectoral Committee on Health Hon. Domiano Muchui. ‎The County Director of Health Dr. Titus Mutura graced a mental health awareness meeting convened by a Community Working Group (CWG) that supports mental health promotion, as well as prevention and control of drug and substance abuse in Meru County.

‎The meeting was spearheaded by the County Government of Meru and the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), underscoring H.E. Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia's commitment to coordinated, evidence based approaches to mental health and substance use prevention.

‎The CWG brings together a multisectoral team of frontline stakeholders including psychologists, probation officers, lecturers, and other professionals actively engaged in mental health promotion and substance abuse prevention and control across the county. Their collective expertise is central to strengthening community level interventions, referral pathways, and public awareness initiatives.

‎Participants also focused on annual planning including priority actions and collaborative activities for 2026, brainstorming effective strategies of mental health promotion and the prevention and control of drug and substance abuse, as well as preparations for Substance Abuse Prevention Week scheduled for February 9 - 13.

‎Also present at the meeting were CWG Chairperson Ruth Mwiti, Meru County Mental Health Coordinator Florence Meme, and Meru County NACADA Coordinator Wilfred Mbogo, among other key stakeholders.

‎The Department of Health Services convened a meeting focused on strengthening the use of evidence to inform policy and planning for adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) programming. The meeting targeted Sub-County Health Coordinators and Records Officers, Adolescent and Young People focal persons, and Sub-County Public Health Nurses.

‎Facilitated by the County Government of Meru in collaboration with the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), the forum aimed to enhance participants’ capacity by strengthening their skills in addressing teenage pregnancy and improving adolescent health outcomes.

‎The County Director of Health Dr. Titus Mutura commended APHRC for its timely intervention, noting that their contribution is highly valued and critical to the success of adolescent health programming in the county.

‎Also in attendance were the Ag. Director of Medical Services Dr. Ka**ke Kaumbuki, the Ag. ‎A delegation from Samburu county led by Samburu's Health Services CECM Dr. Nassir Lekudere has paid Meru county's Health Services CECM Dr. Dennis Mugambi a courtesy call ahead of undertaking a benchmarking tour at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) as part of efforts to strengthen health service delivery, governance, and operational efficiency at Samburu County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

‎Drawn from Samburu County Referral Hospital and accompanied by representatives from four sub-county hospitals, the delegation is on a learning mission to study best practices in hospital management and service delivery. Their visit aims to enhance institutional capacity through exposure to proven systems and models implemented at MeTRH.

‎The benchmarking tour is focusing on several key areas including: hospital governance and administration, management of medical students and interns, revenue systems and financial management, health records and health information systems, best practices in outpatient and inpatient service delivery,
‎management of hospital health products and technologies, as well as infection Prevention and Control (IPC).

‎Leaders from both counties reaffirmed their commitment to continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation in the health sector, noting that such benchmarking initiatives play a critical role in improving the quality of service delivery, accountability, and patient care across county health facilities. Also present was MeTRH CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi, and Director of Health Administration Moses Baiyenia, among others.
