DMRC is a Primary medical center registered in Kenya. We have a medical center in Ngara and actively run social media platforms that educate people about diabetes. The journey was started in May 2014 on Facebook and so far has more than 16,400 community members and more than 110,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram. We have diversified our social platforms by reaching those in Twitter and Whatsapp. The community is mainly run by two individuals who partner with other health professionals to give information to the people. The platforms give selfless information and have created a lot of awareness visible from the feedback we receive. DMRC has also helped people with diabetes to get donors of free glucometers, prosthetic limbs, strips, and drugs, while others have been able to buy them at affordable prices.

As we establish ourselves, we aim to set up centers all over Kenya, especially in rural and urban areas where such centers are few and sometimes unavailable. We believe that information is power, and nobody should suffer from diabetes due to its lack of knowledge or accessibility. With the help of partners, well-wishers and donors, we believe that we can reduce the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. We will work with various professionals to offer the following services:

-Free Blood sugar screening

-Eye and foot screening

-Blood pressure check

-Educating people on nutrition and about diabetes in its broader sense

-Provision of insulin at subsidized prices/ Free to all T1 diabetics

-Organizing events such as walks, and outreach activities that will enable those with diabetes to get free services and donations

-Carry out research through surveys to know the most significant challenge people with diabetes face and how they can be supported.

- Kidney function test

- Arterial function test

- All Laboratory tests

From our inbox", posted as received

"Hi DMRC, let me share m story it can motivate someone. You see, back in 2016, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Okay, let me take you back a little what happened before the diagnosis.

I am a lean person, sijawaikuwa mnono. But my work involved lots of sitting, I am a driver. I had this friend who used to work out and he could tell me to start working out..I could tell him mimi sio overweight so I do not need to work out. Poor me, I didn't know that working out was to keep me fit🥲🥲. Si mnajua vile madere hukula, I was a long distance once..from Nairobi to Mombasa..Nyama kule, fast foods and so much more.

Come 2016, there was a medical camp and free screening in our area..at this time, my body used to be tired all the time and nilijiambia ni uchovu ya driving..my fiancéé jokingly told me tukapimwe rbs.., to my surprise..my sugars were at 10. I was worried, later that week I went to the hospital and that is when I was diagnosed with prediabetes. Luckily, the doctor I got guided me well on how to reverse my sugars.

Let me tell you..saai exercise lazima
Eating healthy lazima
I am more fit.
My sugars are back to normal.
I am a happy person.
Ignorance is a disease, I got well.

And you people are doing a good job educating us."

If the person living with diabetes in your home finds it hard to change their diet, it could be because of the family members😖😖.
Maybe the person is being served brocolli as others eat fast foods, sodas and the rest. A craving becomes worse when a situation is presented. This example aligns well with alcohol addiction where someone has to be put in isolation where they can't see alcohol or associate with people that drink. In this scenario, adopt a health diet for all.

When going for shopping, include everyone when coming up with a shopping list, even the children. They will know what to expect and be ready to eat. Also, if you can, find a nutritionist who will educate you as a family, it will be of great help. Reading food labels should be part of what you need to know.

INSULIN HYPERTROPHY? What is it?🤔🤔
This is to those that inject insulin
Have you ever noticed a lump or even a scar tissue under the skin where you inject yourself?
It is believed to be as a result of repeated insulin injestions which leads to accumulation of extra fat at the site. It occurs most often in people with diabetes who must undergo multiple daily injections, but can also occur in people who wear multiple devices such as an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor.
How to prevent it
-Rotate the injection site. Move the injection site a finger's length (about an inch) away from the last site.
-Use a new needle for every injection to avoid contamination
-Do not inject the area till it heals
-Talk to your doctor who may consider hanging to short-acting insulin
-For those people who are using pumps or continuous glucose monitors, changing sites as prescribed is recommended
If you stop injecting on the area, it usually goes away after a few weeks and sometimes on its own. It should not be a cause for worry
We hope you have learnt something au namna gani?

SITES NOT SUITABLE FOR INSULIN INJECTIONS
Did you know?
That there are places where you should not inject insulin?
-Do not inject insulin near joints. Why?
-Do not inject on a scar tissue
-Avoid injecting on or too close the navel/belly button. This is because the navel is tougher and makes insulin absorption less consistent
-Avoid the groin area
-The middle of your abdomen
Also, do not inject insulin too deep because your body may absorb it too quickly and they could be painful.
Don't inject insulin just anywhere. Insulin should be injected into the fat just underneath the skin rather than into muscle, which can lead to quicker insulin action and greater risk of low blood sugar. The stomach, thighs, buttocks, and upper arms are common injection sites because of their higher fat content.
Well, if you did not know all these, now you know. Right?

We recently saw a sad video going around, the video of a man of God collapsing at the alter and later passed on😭. Did you see it? Unconfirmed sources said it was cardiac arrest, other uncornfirmed sources said he also had diabetes. That video evoked painful memories in me as the founder of DMMC.

It took me back to 2013 when I lost my dad in an almost similar way. A day like Today he is was okay and talking on the phone, and the following day I get a call that he has fallen and upon reaching the hospital, he went to be with the Lord😪😪. I hope that the video could be pulled down for the sake of the family.

Why am I writing this? 🤔🤔

I want you to take charge of your condition. It is true that diabetes increases the risk of congestive heart failure, cardiac arrest and other heart related conditions. Do not be a carefree, please🙏. Unapima unapata your sugars are reading 20mmol na hushtuki😖😖infact you say you are feeling okay so no big deal. How now? The other day when we were doing free blood pressure check..we got a couple of people with high readings, but unbothered🙄🙄( zitarudi tu, pressure yangu inakuwanga juu but itarudi tu yenyewe).

-Each day, make it your goal to control your sugars..complications are something else do not let them set in..each day, learn something new that will give you better control💪💪. If this meal is not working, try another..if one treatment is not working..seek second opinion wherever you are.

-I will also urge you to take good care of your mental health. Your stress levels impact how well controlled your sugars are. To men, usiweke mambo mingi kwa kichwa. Do not let pressure and sugar to pile up..speak up, ongea!💪💪 It helps..what you cannot change, wachana nayo.

-If you think food/education is expensive, try health. Each day, jaribu kukula healthy, jaribu exercise hata k**a ni evening walking pale estate. Usiseme mimi exercise siwezani😪😪it will help you a big deal Susan.

-Usijihukumu, diabetes is not the end..do not let it rob you happiness. Live and let live. Ile meal mnaita diabetic meal is a healthy meal. Enjoy, after all, no one is getting out alive✌️✌️.
In your day to day live, do your best and let God take charge.

As I pen off, my prayer is that you start doing something..that is if you have been reluctant. Push yourself, you can do it.

From me and the DMMC team, we believe that you are stronger than diabetes. We care❤️❤️.

Kindly share this info to anyone you feel it will help.

Later they told me am diabetic and insulin is the only solution. I feared needle so much that I told my dad ,if the is no other option I rather die anyway am already dead inside 😭 my parents stood by me each moment they took their time to encourage me and pray for me...,my parents gave me hope I saw a reason to stay alive and fight ..their faces said it all .

They were sad and it was written all over their faces.I accepted my condition used the prescribed medication stayed strong though there are challenges in this journey I made it to this far .

Why choose Diabetes Management Resource Center (DMRC)?

We are a diabetes center that was built from a patient-perspective. The establishment of the center and the pharmacy was to fill the gap that the diabetes patients faced. We noticed that the public is not well informed about what diabetes is and how to manage it. Their care primarily came from the healthcare team, which led to poor diabetes management. Therefore, we sought to involve those living with diabetes by creating various platforms that will educate and engage them. DMRC shares information freely on all its social sites and our website.

Additionally, we came with a diabetes support group, a Whatsapp group where the members benefit from our resources, discussions, and advice from our diabetes doctor. When members share experiences on the disease and tackle different scenarios, it is a deep relief, especially to the newly diagnosed. Those with recent diagnosis get to understand and have faith that they can control diabetes. We laugh; we learn and keep motivating each other in these groups. The sharing part helps eliminate stress and depression. Our information resources revolve around diabetes management i.e., lifestyle changes, weight loss, exercising, diabetes-related complications, weight management, diet, and many more.

We also noticed that another challenge facing people with diabetes was access to affordable drugs and services. Therefore, we came up with a DMRC pharmacy with a laboratory where we sell a variety of diabetes medicine, do related tests, and free sugar and pressure screening. Our drug store is one of its own because it also has an online pharmacy where patients can order and get their drugs delivered at their doorstep. The online platform has been helpful, especially with this COVID 19 pandemic, because our community will get prompt delivery of medications at their home without worrying about their safety. DMRC also has an online medical clinic where we offer online counseling services at affordable costs. Do you want to talk to a nutritionist from the comfort of your home? She is just a call away! We have friendly zoom consultations services where you will be advised on your diet for only 600/=. The services last for 30 minutes, so you have all the time to exhaust all your problems.

At our pharmacy, you will find a wide range of drugs, kits, and equipment that promote effective diabetes management. We have medications such as neurocare plus, astaxin, almax, cartel, potassium nitrate, why protein, those that treat acne, and many more. For the equipment and kits, we sell affordable digital thermometers, glucometers such as Accucheck, and even HIV self-test kits. Do you need kits/drugs at home? We got you, telephone counseling? We got you. And if you need to know more and more about diabetes, DMRC still got your back. We also believe that our information benefits those without diabetes because they will learn about the lifestyle changes they will make to prevent diabetes. If we have been resourceful, invite your family and friends and let’s all learn and stay healthy
