Growing up, we could make some toys out of wires. This was learned observation, practical teaching and mere desire. This was industry. However, school told us,that some jobs were "not of class." We therefore let go of inborn skills. And we are still importing vehicles.

I imagine that we could have started a toy manufacturing company, but besides importing vehicles, we also import toys... We missed it somewhere..

Those mikebe and wire toys were our key into industrialization, but we were not directed that way... School taught us English...

Well. I stayed at the mjengo for five months, out of which I developed some material management skills. My hands also developed another tough layer-you could light a match stick by it's friction. I was also not paid some cash for that gruelling job- Kenyans just have a way to steal from honest people.

Anyway, I was still applying for jobs, I still went for interviews and was still active at church. I must admit that being unemployed got me stressed, since some of my course mates were already earning good money, one was constructing a house, another driving and here I was....just a graduate.

I think school is a scam. Why? While at church, I used to run a bookshop, in which I bought the books at a discount and sold them to church members, I also used to lend some of the books and make Bible or book markers. If only I had been advised to continue with the business, maybe it would be now a multi billion venture. What I'm developing now is a multimillion one, needing more time. Ahem, having said that, don't ask me for jobs or money, it's the vision I have for it as at now. I said school is a scam coz it only showed me that employment was the only way.

Let me take a break and work on this multimillion dollar company of mine.

To be continued.

And remember, school is a scam

I thought that I would get employed soon after my studies. It took sometime as I stayed at home, broke and getting hopeless. During this period, some parents approached me I tutor their children. Though not enough, it kept my mind engaged.

I later worked for a construction company. The truth is the 9*9 blocks were a nightmare, my soft palms got blisters, but I needed cash. My first day was torture, I had never done such a heavy job before. I got hungry, very hungry, but didn't have the appetite because my body refused. I got home, filled the bathtub with warm water and just relaxed in, soaking up the body to drain the fatigue. My body was like static the following day, movement was belaboured, but I pushed on.

I got to learn a lot, especially from the labourers who depended solely on the job. Payment ranged from ksh 250-400 back then. My mind couldn't understand how one could survive on such an income. I was still young and therefore, my schooling hadn't taught me how one could subsist on such an income. Life later taught me.

One thing I had not done was the "koroga". Mixing the ballast and hauling it like 10 feet up...that exercise was heavy. It's a heavy mixture which requires muscle, my soft muscles which had only lifted biros and books were screaming and I was at one point blaming myself why I had dared to go and do that bit of work. My adventurous spirit was also hinting that maybe this is an experience you will use in your future...

To be continued.....
But I was at a mjengo
