Today, we are thrilled to recognize Eugene Hickman, a , in honor of !
Eugene Hickman was a highly respected pharmacist, teacher, and mentor who devoted his life to supporting Black pharmacy students. During his tenure at Texas Southern University from 1959-1998, he helped 33% of all U.S. Black pharmacists graduate.
Following his tour in the U.S. Army, Dr. Hickman was a member of the first graduating class of Texas Southern University's School of Pharmacy in 1952. Then, breaking long-standing barriers of racial segregation, Dr. Hickman became one of two Black students admitted to the University of Texas' graduate program, where he received his master's degree. He later became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in Pharmacy at the University of Iowa.
Shortly after completing his education, Dr. Hickman joined the faculty at Texas Southern University. During his four decades with the pharmacy program, Dr. Hickman remained committed to paving the way for Black student pharmacists to graduate and launch their careers.
Dr. Hickman's contributions have been praised by his colleagues and former students, and he received numerous awards for his efforts that revolutionized pharmacy education.
