Recently the country was shocked by the National Aids Control Unit findings that there are approximately 100 new HIV infections among the youth aged 15-24 years. Additionally, 268,588 youth aged 15 to 24 years are living with HIV/AIDs in Kenya. It means that a significant number of young people in high schools and colleges are s*xually active. We need to talk to our children as young as 12 years about the risks of indiscriminate s*x.

The prevalence of Childhood obesity in Africa has in the last 25 years rose from 4.8% to 6.1%. Kenya is not spared as more than 10% of school going children are overweight. If the trend is not reversed, cases of diabetes in children will continue to rise. At Africare, we implore the parents and society at large to make healthy dietary choices for the children.

Comprehensive Sexual Education will save our Youth
Imagine 46% of all new HIV infections are occurring among the youth aged 15-30 years. In numbers it is about 50, 000 infections annually. Comprehensive s*xual education among the youth can possibly reduce this HIV menace. The young people should be educated on both abstinence and use of condoms. Teaching our young people about s*x and condoms should no longer be treated as a taboo.
