*Nairobi County Health Sector Launches State of the Art Equipments including 4 digital X-ray machines with low-radiation exposure to Boost Lung Health Services*
Nairobi 10th July, 2025
Nairobi City County Government, through the Department of Public Health, has today unveiled a new set of diagnostic equipment aimed at enhancing the detection, treatment, and management of lung diseases across the county.
The launch marks a significant milestone in the countyโs ongoing commitment to strengthening respiratory health services and expanding access to quality, affordable care.
Presiding over the launch, the County Chief Officer in charge of Public Health Mr Tom Nyakaba said, "We are proud to support this initiative because the equipment provided are helpful, affordable, and portable. I commend the teams behind this effort and urge all stakeholders to continue supporting the rollout.โ
The newly launched equipment include:
- 6 spirometers for lung function testing
- 22 peak flow meters for asthma monitoring
- 4 digital X-ray machines with low-radiation exposure
These devices will be deployed across Level 4 and 5 health facilities, improving early detection and treatment of respiratory conditions such as asthma, tuberculosis (TB), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer.
Elizabeth Mueni, Nairobi County Coordinator for TB and Lung Disease Prevention, emphasized the practicality of the equipments. "The devices are not only effective but also well-suited for our facilities due to their portability and cost-efficiency.โ she said.
The acquisition and deployment of the equipments has been made possible through collaborative efforts with key partners including:
- CHAI (Clinton Health Access Initiative): Donated 3 spirometers, 22 peak flow meters, and is supporting upgrades to previously assessed but partially ready X-ray sites to meet placement criteria.
- ResOK: Contributed 3 additional spirometers.
- CIHEB Kenya: Donated 4 digital X-ray machines to be installed within the County.
This support forms part of the Integrated Program of Asthma, COPD and TB (iPACT), which seeks to integrate lung health services into primary healthcare delivery.
Mr. Wesley Tomno from the National TB Program lauded the initiative and noted that more digital X-ray machines are scheduled for deployment later this month. He urged County leadership to ensure that facility readiness assessments are completed promptly.
Also speaking at the event was Ms Sharon Olwande of CHAI who highlighted the progress made so far, including baseline assessments and strong collaboration with the County Government. She reaffirmed CHAIโs commitment to supporting full integration and long-term sustainability of lung health services.
This milestone underscores Nairobiโs dedication to investing in preventative and primary healthcare, especially in underserved communities.
