City Hall Fumigates Burma Market to Enhance Meat Safety Standards

November 14, 2025

Nairobi County Public Health officers today carried out a major fumigation and sanitation exercise at Burma Market as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety and hygiene standards in the city’s meat markets.

Led by County Chief Officer for Public Health Tom Nyakaba, the team inspected stalls, conducted hygiene checks, and held a meeting with the market committee and traders to reinforce compliance with public health regulations.

Speaking during the visit, Nyakaba said the operation aimed to ensure that all meat outlets meet the highest standards of cleanliness and safety, especially as demand rises toward the festive season.

“Today we were at Burma Market here in Nairobi to inspect the condition of the meat market to ensure it meets the best public health standards. As the demand for meat begins to rise, it is our responsibility to maintain health standards in all our facilities, especially those dealing with food,” said Nyakaba.

He added that the County had fumigated and cleaned the market to prevent bacterial contamination and ensure compliance with licensing and safety requirements among traders.

“We have fumigated and cleaned to stop micro-bacteria. We are also ensuring that all meat vendors possess valid licenses because this is a matter of public health,” he said.

Nyakaba emphasized that only approved vehicles should be used to transport meat, warning that the County had banned the use of Probox vehicles for meat distribution following recent health incidents.

“To maintain health standards in meat facilities, we have banned Probox cars from carrying meat. Any approved vehicle should have an identification number that can be traced back to the market. This will help prevent cases like the one we had last week involving anthrax. Let’s comply — we can have Probox cars carrying people, but not meat,” he cautioned.

He further noted that the Meat Control Act provides clear guidelines on how meat should be handled, transported, and stored — urging compliance across all markets.

“The Meat Act already provides standards on how to transport meat and the necessary processes. We encourage those in charge to do their best and ensure full adherence,” Nyakaba added.

He also announced that Governor Johnson Sakaja has approved the deployment of two public health officers to monitor meat hygiene at the market day and night.

“The Governor has approved that we have two public health officers stationed here to ensure continuous inspection of meat throughout the day and night,” he said.

Following a work slowdown by health workers over delayed salaries, Governor for Nairobi Johnson Sakaja today chaired a crucial meeting to resolve the impasse. The Governor was joined by Chief Officer for Public Health Tom Nyakaba, Health CEC Suzanne Silantoi, and workers' union officials among others.

Mr. Nyakaba, who just returned from the US as part of the Kenyan delegation to the UN General Assembly, layed the blame on the Controller of Budget for the delays.

However, the Governor promised to continue pursuing all available channels while assuring all county workers that the matter will be treated differently henceforth.

Nyakaba used the operation to stress that all innovative businesses, including food trucks, are not exempt from county food handling regulations.

He urged entrepreneurs to seek counsel to ensure they are in compliance with all relevant laws and policies, stating, , "𝐀 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲."

Nairobi, Kenya – The County Government of Nairobi has taken decisive action to enforce food safety regulations around Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), shutting down several food kiosks that were operating in undesignated areas. The operation, led by Jane Mburugu and Shem Oino who head the Food Safety Enforcement team for Nairobi City County, saw officers engage with vendors to facilitate a smooth relocation from the vicinity of Kenya's largest referral hospital.

The officers were joined by the Deputy Director, Food Safety Mackline Saitera.

Following the enforcement, Shem Oino met with KNH Deputy CEO Job Makanga, accompanied by MCA Woodley Davison Ngibuini and Kibra Sub County Food Safety Focal Person Gilbert Yegon. During the meeting, a resolution was made to permanently ban all food vending in the immediate surroundings of KNH.

Instead, Deputy CEO Job Makanga indicated plans for the establishment of a standardized canteen facility within the hospital premises.

This move aligns with broader efforts by the Nairobi County Government, under 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐣𝐚, to enforce previously disregarded county laws. Earlier this year, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐲𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐚 led various operations aimed at ensuring adherence to Public Health Safety guidelines, including a prohibition on open-air cooking.

While the County Government emphasizes its commitment to fostering a favorable environment for entrepreneurs, it is also striving to balance this with the crucial need to maintain order and public health standards for all residents within the county.

Both Chief Officers expressed gratitude and stressed continued support for this impactful community health model.
