*AFLAR New Year Message*

Dear AFLAR Members,

As we approach the end of 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on our achievements and express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your tireless efforts and dedication to our community.

This year, we have made significant strides in advancing our mission and promoting the values of our organization. Some of our notable achievements include:

•Successfully hosting our annual world arthritis day conference, which brought together experts and professionals from across the region to share knowledge and best practices.

•Launching new initiatives and programs aimed at supporting the professional development of our members and promoting collaboration and innovation in our field.

•Strengthening our partnerships with key stakeholders and organizations, both regionally and internationally.

•Expanding our membership base and increasing our online presence through social media and our website.

•Setting up the AFLAR PARA Registry, a critical tool for data tracking and improving outcomes for patients with rheumatoid arthritis across Africa.
•Strengthening our partnerships with international organizations, including the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), to promote knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and advocacy.

•Enhancing our organizational foundation and governance structure, including the establishment of new committees and task forces to drive our strategic objectives.

•Launching the Young African Rheumatologists Network (YARN), a vibrant community of early-career rheumatologists dedicated to advancing rheumatology care and research in Africa.

As we look to the future, we have exciting plans in store for 2025 and beyond. Some of our key priorities include:

▪︎Continuing to develop and deliver high-quality training and education programs that meet the evolving needs of our members.
▪︎Expanding our advocacy efforts to promote the interests of our members and the wider community, including patients with rheumatic diseases.
▪︎Strengthening our connections with other organizations and stakeholders to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
▪︎Exploring new opportunities for innovation and growth, including the use of technology and digital platforms.

As we embark on another new chapter in our journey, I want to thank you again for your commitment to AFLAR and for being part of our vibrant and dynamic community. I am honoured to serve as your President and together with our EXCO we hope to achieve great things in the years to come.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year!

Sincerely,

Dzifa Dey

AFLAR Personality Spotlight – December 2024
This December, AFLAR is proud to shine its spotlight on Professor Girish M. Mody, a trailblazer in rheumatology whose remarkable contributions have shaped the field across Africa and beyond.
Born on January 20, 1950, in Durban, South Africa, Professor Mody has dedicated his life to advancing rheumatology and improving musculoskeletal health. As the Aaron Beare Family Professor of Rheumatology (1992–2021) and now Emeritus Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, his legacy spans decades of pioneering work in education, patient care, and advocacy.
He is the first African rheumatologist to earn the esteemed title of “Master” by the American College of Rheumatology.
He served as AFLAR President (1999–2003), driving impactful initiatives, including educational grants and fellowships for African rheumatologists.
He has mentored over 20 specialists from countries like Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Kenya, helping train Ethiopia’s first rheumatologists.
He has participated in educational forums in 13 African nations and contributed to expanding rheumatology services in underserved areas.
Professor Mody’s efforts with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bone and Joint Decade have raised global awareness of rheumatic diseases and improved access to specialized care in Africa. As a tireless advocate for musculoskeletal health, his legacy is defined by collaboration, mentorship, and a commitment to excellence.
Did You Know?
Professor Mody holds the unique distinction of being the only rheumatologist to attend every AFLAR Congress since its inception in 1991.
As we celebrate his extraordinary journey, AFLAR applauds Professor Mody’s unwavering dedication to transforming patients' lives and inspiring future generations of rheumatologists. His work continues to pave the way for a healthier, stronger Africa.
