Calming Strategies for Children on the Autism Spectrum
Children on the autism spectrum often experience the world in unique and intense ways. Loud noises, bright lights, transitions, or even a change in routine can lead to sensory overload and emotional distress. At EDS Therapies Africa, we believe that every child deserves tools to feel safe, understood, and calm.
Here are a few evidence-based calming strategies that can make a big difference:
🧸 Create a Calm Space
A quiet, cozy area with soft lighting, comforting textures, or a favorite toy can offer the security a child needs to self-regulate.
🎧 Use Sensory Tools
Noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, weighted blankets, or chewable jewelry can help manage sensory input and support self-soothing.
🗣️ Practice Deep Breathing or Bubble Breaths
Simple breathing exercises like “smell the flower, blow the candle” can calm the nervous system—especially when practiced regularly.
🎨 Offer Visual Supports
Visual schedules, feelings charts, and calming cue cards help children understand what’s happening and what to expect next.
🎵 Use Music or Movement
Calming music, slow rocking, gentle swings, or even a quiet walk can help release built-up energy and regulate emotions.
💡 Every child is different—what calms one may not work for another. That’s why it’s important to try various strategies and observe what helps your child feel most at peace.
